Red Storm to compete in Boston College’s home meet for the first time in seven seasons
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's cross country team will hit the road and head north to Boston for the Battle in Beantown on Friday, hosted by Boston College. The 5k race will get underway at 12 noon at Franklin Park.
The Red Storm enters Friday's meet coming off its best-ever finish at the Brother John "Paddy" Doyle Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park last Friday. The Johnnies finished fifth to pair with their fourth-place result at the Stony Brook Invite on Sept. 3.
Freshman Ezgi Yasar paced the team for the first time in her career in the Bronx, posting a mark of 19:19.00 and grabbing 11th place in her collegiate 5k debut. Claire Cushing continued her solid 2022 season last Friday, finishing second on the squad and 16th overall with a time of 19:30.70.
Ana Markovina and Hannah Huleatt bolstered the Johnnies' fifth-place result with a pair of top-40 overall finishes. Markovina secured 35th place in her second career meet while Huleatt earned 37th place.
Jenna D'Onofrio, Gabriella Caronia and Tiffany-Ann Matturro rounded out the finishers for the Red Storm. All three veterans posted a time below 23 minutes and will look to continue to improve in Boston on Friday.
The women's race will feature 21 teams from across the country, including two ranked squads in No. 20 Harvard and No. 23 Gonzaga and two other schools (Syracuse and Penn State) that received votes in the most recent USTFCCCA national poll.
Friday's meet will mark the first time St. John's has participated in Boston College's home meet since 2015. Seven seasons ago, five Johnnies logged personal bests and finished with an average 5k time of 20:08 while competing against some of the best teams in the nation.
