St. John’s Captures Home Win Over Marquette, 66-61

Red Storm tie program record with 12th straight win in Carnesecca Arena
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's basketball team fended off a late push from Marquette to grab a 66-61 victory on Wednesday night.
After trailing by a point with just over five minutes to go, St. John's put together a 14-2 run to secure a victory and move to 15-3 on the season.
The Johnnies win snaps an eight-game losing streak against their conference foe and ties the longest winning streak in program history inside Carnesecca Arena, capturing their 12th straight victory at their home venue.
Danielle Patterson enjoyed a stellar performance, scoring a season-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and grabbed four rebounds.
The squad's two leading scorers Kadaja Bailey and Jayla Everett each went for a team-high 18 points in Queens.
St. John's (15-3, 6-3 BIG EAST) had its best shooting performance of the year, recording a season-high 52.5 percent from field goal range, its best mark since Dec. 5, 2021, when it shot 58.9 percent in a 88-75 win over Seton Hall.
Marquette's (11-7, 4-5 BIG EAST) Jordan King and Chloe Marotta accounted for 51 of the Golden Eagles' 61 points on Wednesday night. King finished with a game-high 27 points.
In the first quarter, Everett received a pass from Bailey and buried a deep 3-pointer, her first of the night. Moments later, a Bailey block led to a Danielle Patterson triple in the corner, assisted by Everett, to make it 16-9 with 0:53 remaining in the opening frame.
After a Patterson bucket in the paint brought the St. John's lead to nine in the second quarter, Marquette climbed back, as a Nia Clark jumper made it 25-23 with 1:10 left in the half. During the final minute, Bailey banked one off the backboard, as the shot clock dwindled. The make moved Bailey inside the top-15 in career points, surpassing Pam Odom. The redshirt senior finished the night with 18 points and currently sits in 13th in program history with 1,295 career points. Bailey's final bucket of the opening half gave the Johnnies a four-point edge at the break, 27-23.
In the third quarter, Patterson continued to shine, recording a highlight-reel fadeaway shot over the outstretched arm of a Golden Eagles defender. Everett flushed her second triple of the night with 2:33 remaining to give the Johnnies their first double-digit lead, 44-33. However, the Golden Eagles' refused to back down as their leading scorer, Jordan King, cashed in pair of a buckets to cut it to 44-38 at the conclusion of the third quarter.
Unique Drake started the Red Storm off on the right foot drilling a corner 3-pointer off an assist from Everett on the opening possession of the fourth. As the frame went on, the visitors continued to inch closer until the Golden Eagles retook the lead with 5:04 left on the clock, courtesy of a Marotta lay-up. Everett responded finding the bottom of the net on a mid-range jumper, which sparked an 8-0 spurt for the Red Storm. The run was capped off by a fastbreak finish from Mimi Reid, to make it 59-52, with 1:22 remaining and force a Marquette timeout.
The Red Storm took care of business from the charity stripe in the closing stages, making 7-of-8 down the stretch to secure a conference victory and advance to 6-3 in league play.
Next up for the Red Storm is a road trip to the Windy City to challenge DePaul on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET.
