Red Storm will host Quinnipiac and travel to LIU on back-to-back afternoons
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 24, 2023)- The St. John's men's tennis team will open its season against Quinnipiac on Thursday at the UTSA Tennis Center at 12:30 p.m. The following day, the squad will travel to play against LIU at Syosset Sportime at noon.
The new-look Johnnies open the season after a successful fall slate. Diogo Marques impressed throughout the fall slate, ending the fall ranked no. 113 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Marques excelled in singles play finishing 9-2 and making a run to the round of 16 at the ITA Super Regionals. Marques teamed up with Axel Vila Antuna and the duo made an impressive trip to the semifinals before falling to then ranked no. 21 Westphal and Winegar of Columbia.
The Red Storm enjoyed success last spring, culminated by an appearance in the BIG EAST Championship match. The squad finished the spring 17-6 and earned the top-seed in the conference tournament. The Johnnies knocked out eight-seeded Georgetown, and fourth-seeded Butler, before falling in the title match to the second-seeded DePaul Blue Demons.
Despite the strong 2022 campaign, and an exemplary fall, the Johnnies are sporting a new-look team. Head Coach Dillon Pottish added five new faces to the group since the conclusion of the fall, and is excited to see how the new faces will perform for the Red Storm.
Quinnipiac was swept in its season opener last Thursday at Brown. Last season the Bobcats were runner-up in the MAAC Tournament after a 4-2 conference slate. Quinnipiac welcomes Bryan Adolfini to the program for his first season at the helm of the program.
The Red Storm are a perfect 6-0 against the Bobcats. Last spring the Johnnies traveled Connecticut for the first time and grabbed a 6-1 win.
LIU opens its spring season against the Johnnies. In its inaugural season last spring, the Sharks compiled a 14-10 record earning the fourth seed in the NEC Tournament. After knocking out fifth-seeded Sacred Heart, the Sharks fell in the semifinals to top-seeded Bryant, 4-0.
The two schools are meeting for only the second time in program history. The Red Storm swept the Sharks, 5-0, last March at UTSA.
After two straight home matches, the Red Storm will hit the road and travel to Cornell for a Sunday matinee match with the Big Red.
