Men’s Tennis Rolls Quinnipiac 6-1 in Season Opener

Adam Groves and Anton Stendal earn two victories on the day
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 26, 2023)- The St. John's men's tennis youth and newcomers shined in a 6-1 victory against Quinnipiac at the UTSA Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.
The win marks the fourth consecutive Spring season-opening victory for the Red Storm (1-0).
St. John's swept the doubles matches, winning all three decisions. The top pairing of Axel Vila Antuna and Giuseppe De Camelis defeated Kemal Karagozoglu and Sharuya Sood 6-1. Ryota Kaneda and Adam Groves clinched the point for the Red Storm with their 6-2 victory over Csanad Nyardi and Andres Whalen-Merediz. The third pairing drew excitement after the conclusions of the first two matches resulting with the duo of Carl Gustafsson and Anton Stendal taking the win over Donovan Brown and Ayato Arakaki, 7-6 (7-4).
The Red Storm kept up the momentum in singles play, claiming five of the six matches. Groves and Stendal each picked up their second win of the day with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Donovan Brown and a 6-1, 7-6 (5) victory against Sood, respectively. Earning the nod at No.1 singles, newcomer Sergio Molina took down Ayato Arakaki, 6-2, 6-7 (3), 10-4. Nishant Dabas defeated Whalen-Merediz 6-0, 3-0 retired. Filipe Grebentsov earned his first collegiate win with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Kemal Karagozoglu.
St. Johnnies will be back in action tomorrow traveling to Syossett, N.Y. to take on the LIU Sharks.
