Men’s Tennis Travels to Cornell for Third Match in Four Days

The Red Storm opened the season 2-0
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 28, 2023)- The St. John's men's tennis team will hit the road for an away contest on Sunday against Cornell at Reis Tennis Center. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
The Red Storm have started out the spring campaign with back-to-back 6-1 wins. The Johnnies opened its season on Thursday against Quinnipiac, and Friday at LIU. Adam Groves acquired a win in both matches, the only singles player with two wins. The duos of Groves/Ryota Kaneda and Carl Gustafsson and Anton Stendal are 2-0 in doubles play.
The Johnnies enjoyed successful fall slate. Diogo Marques impressed throughout the fall slate, ending the fall ranked no. 113 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Marques excelled in singles play finishing 9-2 and making a run to the round of 16 at the ITA Super Regionals. Marques teamed up with Axel Vila Antuna and the duo made an impressive trip to the semifinals before falling to then ranked no. 21 Westphal and Winegar of Columbia.
The Red Storm enjoyed success last spring, culminated by an appearance in the BIG EAST Championship match. The squad finished the spring 17-6 and earned the top-seed in the conference tournament. The Johnnies knocked out eight-seeded Georgetown, and fourth-seeded Butler, before falling in the title match to the second-seeded DePaul Blue Demons.
After the strong 2022 campaign, and an exemplary fall, the Johnnies are sporting a new-look team. Head Coach Dillon Pottish added five new faces to the group since the conclusion of the fall, and is excited to see how the new faces will perform for the Red Storm.
Cornell opens its spring with a trio of home matches, first with Buffalo on Saturday. The Big Red had its best season since 2016-17 last season finishing 17-8 overall.
St. John's will play its lone match of the week next Friday at Lehigh.
