Four Red Storm players finished in double-figures in scoring on Tuesday night
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team dropped its Tuesday night tilt with Seton Hall, 68-58.
The Red Storm pulled within five in the final two minutes, but were unable to complete the comeback after facing a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter,
Seton Hall's Lauren Park-Lane fueled the Pirates with 31 points, including 25 in the opening half of action to lead the visitors to a road win.
Four Red Storm players finished in double-figures on Tuesday night, led by Jayla Everett who finished with 14 points and made some crucial buckets in the fourth quarter.
Kadaja Bailey chipped in 12 points, with the majority coming from the charity stripe. The redshirt senior tied a career-high in made free-throws, going 8-for-9 from the line.
Unique Drake concluded the outing in double-figures for the third-straight game, adding 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field. Danielle Patterson was the final Johnnie to score over 10 points and also logged 12 at Carnesecca. The graduate student forward is averaging 11.0 points per game over her last four appearances. The duo accounted for 24 of the Johnnies' 28 bench points.
The team's leading rebounder Rayven Peeples collected 12 boards on the night, the ninth time this season she has finished in double-figures in rebounding.
In a defensive-minded opening quarter, Park-Lane spurred a 9-0 run for the visitors before a mid-range make from Everett brought it to a halt. Midway through the opening stanza, Jillian Archer corralled her 500th career rebound after chasing down her own blocked shot. The first 10 minutes wrapped up with Seton Hall (14-8, 7-5 BIG EAST) ahead, 13-9.
During the following frame, St. John's (17-4, 8-4 BIG EAST) retook the lead, 26-25, after Drake buried a triple from the corner off a feed from Mimi Reid, who logged a game-high five assists. The Pirates rallied with a 15-3 scoring surge, Park-Lane added 13 points during that stretch. A last second 3-pointer from the talented guard gave the Pirates a 40-29 advantage going into halftime.
A 6-0 run midway through the third quarter brought the Johnnies back within striking distance, which was capped off by a made jumper from Everett off an in-bounds play. The Pirates continued to fend off the home squad and ballooned its advantage back to double-digits with a buzzer beating jumper from Sidney Cooks as the third quarter clock ran out.
The Pirates expanded its lead to as many as 15, their largest of the game in the final frame but the resilient Red Storm clawed its way back into the game. Everett hit from deficit to cut the deficit to nine, 58-49, to force a Seton Hall timeout with 8:21 remaining.
After a Pirates basket, the Red Storm rattled off a 6-0 spurt, as a made field goal from Everett brought them within five, 60-55.
Down six in the final two minutes, a pair of offensive rebounds gave the Red Storm three chances on one possession to make it a one-score game but were unable to convert from beyond-the-arc on three tries. Seton Hall took care of business at the free-throw line down the stretch to clinch a road victory.
The Red Storm clamped down on Park-Lane in the second half, holding her to six points on 2-of-11 shooting in the final 20 minutes.
St. John's will hit the road for its next game on Saturday when it takes on Creighton at 2 p.m. ET in Omaha.
