Red Storm head to Cincinnati following 3-1 victory over Butler
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's soccer team will prepare for a showdown with No. 19 Xavier on Sunday afternoon.
The contest at Corcoran Field will start at 1 p.m. Paul Fritschner will have the call on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
On Thursday night, the Red Storm attack flourished netting three goals in the final 26 minutes of the match to put away Butler, 3-1.
The win propelled St. John's into fifth in the league table and a 3-3-1 mark in BIG EAST play. Overall, Ian Stone's group holds a 8-4-3 record on the year.
Jordyn Levy, Ava Collins and Jessica Garziano tallied goals in the winning effort, while Athina Sofroniou and Frederique St.-Jean registered helpers.
The Johnnies' attack was incredibly efficient scoring three goals on just five shots for an impeccable shooting percentage of 60.
After St. John's took a 2-0 lead, Butler got one back and had an opportunity to tie in the 86th minute from the penalty spot. Talia Sommer's try went wide and just one minute later Garziano scored a dazzing goal to put the contest out of reach.
Garziano's tally marked her eighth goal of the season has now reached the 25-point mark for the year. The Melville, N.Y., native becomes just the eighth player in program history to record 25 points or more in a single-season. The captain leads the league in points and assists (9).
Collins has provided a significant boost since returning from injury. The New Zealand national has made three consecutive starts and found the back-of-the-net twice in that span.
No. 19 Xavier is the second-nationally ranked opponent the Johnnies have faced this season and carry an impressive 10-3-2 record. The Musketeers are currently on a seven-match unbeaten streak and haven't lost since Sept. 14. In league play, the squad holds a 3-0-3 mark and currently sits in second place just three points behind Georgetown with a game in hand.
Last time out, Xavier registered a 1-0 victory over UConn in Storrs behind a game-winner from Samantha Wiehe in the 31stminute on Sunday. The Musketeers were idle on Thursday.
The Musketeers are superb defensively and boast a goals against average of 0.53. The goaltender Maria Galley has logged eight shutouts, which ranks eighth in NCAA Division I.
St. John's has controlled the all-time series leading its conference foe 7-3-1 in all-time meetings. Sunday's contest marks a rematch of the 2022 BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals. Garziano provided the go-ahead goal in the opening half before Xavier tied it in the 71st minute to force overtime. The Musketeers outlasted the Johnnies in the extra period to earn a 3-1 double overtime victory and spot in the title game.
On the same stage in 2021, the Red Storm defeated then-No. 11 Xavier, 1-0, to advance to its first BIG EAST Tournament Championship game since 1994.
The Midwest road trip marks the first of two-straight for St. John's as it will venture to Milwaukee to face Marquette on Oct. 22.
