St. John’s Competes in the Youree Spence-Garcia Invitational

The Johnnies earned three wins in the season-opening meet
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The St. John's track and field team opened its season at the Youree Spence-Garcia Invitational on Saturday inside the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.
As a team, the Red Storm earned three wins in shot put, weight throw and the 4x400-meter relay and recorded top-three finishes in 10 events.
Senior Brooklyn Chestnut sprinted her way to a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.62 seconds. Freshman Karese Lloyd claimed third in the event with a time of 7.75 seconds in her first collegiate race.
Delicia Bent took second in the 300-meter dash, finishing the race in 38.95 seconds while Dolce McPherson took second and third place in the 400-meter and 200-meter dash, respectively. In the 400-meter dash, Blessing Assoumany, Jalen Jackson and Ciara Wiltshire rounded out the Johnnies' effort with third, fourth and fifth-place results.
The Red Storm earned a victory in the 4x400-meter relay as Assoumany, Leilani Robinson, Bent and Chestnut crossed the finish line in 3:59.47. In the 4x800-meter relay, Ezgi Yasar, Gabriella Caronia, Claire Cushing and Jenna D'Onofrio logged a second-place effort in 9:55.04.
In the distance events, Ana Dobsa claimed a second-place victory in the 100-meter run with a finishing time of 3:02.49 in her first track meet for St. John's. Nora Haugen and Cushing each notched fourth place results in the 500-meter run and 300-meter run, respectively.
Freshman Ruth Smith recorded a jump of 1.60 meters, which was good for second place in the high jump event.
In the throw events, the Johnnies claimed victories in both shot put and the weight throw. Jamora Alves continued right where she left off last season, by winning the shot put with a heave of 14.03 meters. In her first meet with the Red Storm, Maja Henry took second place in the shot put with a throw of 13.28 meters. In the weight throw, the Johnnies claimed all top-4 spots in the event. Ismini Andreou topped her competition with a throw of 16.56 meters, while Alves took second with a 15.20-meter result. Desiree Pagan and Martina De Buglio claimed third and fourth place.
St. John's will take an extended break before it gears up for the Villanova Invitational at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island, N.Y. on Jan. 20.
