St. John’s Drops Midweek Contest to No. 9/8 Rutgers

Brian Kelly and Connor Kalmus scored twice against the Scarlet Knight
PISCATAWAY, N.J.- The St. John's lacrosse team fell to No. 9/8 Rutgers by a score of 20-6 on Tuesday afternoon at SHI Stadium.
Brian Kelly tallied a team-high four points against the Scarlet Knights, scoring twice and adding two assists. Kelly extended his game and point streak to six games. The Red Hook, N.Y., has logged multiple points in all four games this season.
Connor Kalmus notched his third multi-goal game this season, finding the back of the net twice on Tuesday.
Sean Duffy and Luke Mangan each scored once, and Caleb Zuhoski chipped in one helper to extend his point streak to three games.
Rutgers opened the scoring with two quick goals by Ross Scott and Logan Peters to give the Scarlet Knights a 2-0 lead three minutes into the contest.
Kelly found his first goal of the afternoon on a whirling shot from the left wing that found the top-right corner of the cage to cut the Red Storm deficit to one, 2-1, with 9:37 to go in the first.
The home team quickly answered back with two scores to push the lead to 4-1 at the 7:47 mark of the opening frame.
It was Kelly once again who stopped the mini-run with his second score of the afternoon to bring the Johnnies closer, 4-2.
The Scarlet Knights closed the first with two more scores to take a 6-2 lead heading into the second quarter.
In the second period, it was St. John's who started out hot, scoring three straight goals to open the frame to cut the Rutgers lead to one, Kalmus found paydirt twice at the 12:40 and 10:14 marks, respectively, before Mangan fired one into the top-left corner of the cage to make the score 6-5 in favor of Rutgers with less than four minutes to go in the first half.
The Scarlets Knights scored twice to close the half to take a three-goal lead, 8-5, after the opening 30 minutes of play.
Rutgers took control in the third quarter, scoring seven unanswered goals in the frame to expand the advantage to 15-5 in favor of the hosts heading into the final period.
The Scarlet Knights opened the final frame with three more goals before Duffy scored for the third straight game to make the score, 18-6, at the 10:05 mark.
Rutgers found the back of the net twice in the waning moments of the afternoon and secured the 20-6 victory.
The Red Storm will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Vestal, N.Y., to take on the Binghamton Bearcats at 12 p.m.
