The Red Storm earn its first sweep of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 3, 2023) - The St. John's men's tennis team swept Lehigh on Friday night at Lewis Indoor Tennis Center in Bethlehem, Penn.
The Red Storm (3-1) squeezed out three doubles victories in tight contests. All three matches required seven sets to win. The duo playing in the no.1 slot of Nishant Dabas and Sergio Molina won 7-5 against Marc Blekman and Matt Kleiman. The Red Storm's Anton Stendal and Carl Gustafsson improved to 3-1 on the season with a 7-6 victory against Jeremy Learner and Jordan Paul. In the final doubles match, the tandem of Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda also improved their record to 3-1 to tie the pairing of Stendal and Gustafsson for the team lead. The duo defeated Steven Nazaroff and Aristotelis Bezianis, 7-6.
In singles play, Gustafsson and Stendal each won their third match of the season to lead the team in victories. Gustafsson kept his perfect singles record intact with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Kleiman in the no.1 slot. Stendal earned his victory 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 at the no. 3 slot against Paul. Dabas, Molina, and Kaneda each earned their second wins of the day with singles wins. Molina took down Learner in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Dabas needed three sets to secure the win against Blekhman, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. In the no. 5 singles match, Kaneda took down Morash 6-1, 6-2.
St. John's will enjoy a six-day break before playing three matches next weekend. The Red Storm will host Wagner on Friday, before traveling to West Point, N.Y. for a pair of matches against Army and Marist.
