Red Storm to compete in first meet outside of New York this season
QUEENS, N.Y.- After winning the Metropolitan Championships Indoor title, the St. John's track and field team will look to keep the momentum going when it travels north to Boston for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational. The two-day meet will get underway on Friday at 10:00 a.m. with the women's 5,000-meter run.
The sprints group had a strong performance last week at Ocean Breeze as Brooklyn Chestnut and Tatyana McKenzie each captured a win in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes, respectively. McKenzie's 200-meter time of 24.00 ranks first in the BIG EAST this season. Chestnut has logged a win in four of the five indoor meets in 2022-23.
Nora Haugen is set to continue her run of strong performances in the 400 meters, posting a strong time of 56.48 to finish second at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships last Friday. The freshman from Norway has not finished lower than 10th in the event this season. Haugen will also compete in the 200-meter dash for the third time this season.
Fellow newcomer Nia Holden has stepped up in a big way this season, holding a top 10 time in the BIG EAST in the 800 meters with a mark of 2:11.90.
In the field events, Cassandra Lemus-Sodji also holds a top 10 spot in the long jump and grabbed second at Ocean Breeze with a leap of 5.44 meters. Samantha Morillo-Martinez is coming off her best performance in the shot put, winning the event at the Metropolitan Championships with a heave of 13.75 meters. Morillo-Martinez's result leads the conference in the shot put.
