Danny Seaman tallies 16 saves in first collegiate start
QUEENS, N.Y.— The St. John's lacrosse team fell on Saturday afternoon to No. 12/11 Jacksonville at DaSilva Memorial Field, 17-9.
The Red Storm stayed within striking distance in the first half before a four-goal run to start the second half gave the Dolphins a comfortable advantage they never relinquished.
Sean Duffy led the team with three goals on the afternoon, matching his season-high and stretching his goal-scoring streak to five games.
The team's leading point scorer Brian Kelly finished with two goals on the afternoon. The talented sophomore now has his point total up to 24 through six games.
Caleb Zuhoski, Jack Lutfi, Connor Kalmus and Dan Koban each tallied a single goal. Five Red Storm players- Casey Hurley, Gavin Legg, Luke Mangan, Kyle Wasilewski and Zuhoski record one assist apiece.
Freshman Danny Seaman logged a strong day between the pipes in his first collegiate start. The rookie turned away 16 of 53 shots.
Legg led the team with three forced turnovers, while freshman defenseman Harry Noel chipped in two takeaways and four groundballs.
Jacksonville's Dylan Watson paced the visitors with five goals and one assist on 19 shots. Max Waldbaum recorded a game-high seven points (4 G's, 3 A's) for the Dolphins.
In the initial 15 minutes, Jacksonville opened the scoring before Duffy evened the score line with his first of the day. Lutfi, who made his first appearance in 2023 after missing five games with an injury, stormed down the middle and buried one to give the Red Storm its first lead of the day, 2-1.
Watson tallied the next two before Duffy sent one home to knot the game, 3-3. Jacksonville then spurred a 5-0 scoring run in the second quarter to take control.
The Johnnies swung the momentum in the closing stages of the first half Kelly ended the Jacksonville scoring stretch in the second quarter with 1:01 remaining. Moments later, A long heave off of a turnover from Wasilewski found Zuhoski, who rifled one into the back-of the-net with just one second remaining in the opening half to make it, 8-5, heading into the break.
The Dolphins came out hot to start the third quarter and ballooned its lead to as many as seven 12-5, after a a four-goal spurt to begin the second half.
St. John's (0-6) recorded the following two goals as Duffy completed his hat-trick off a dish from Zuhoski. Three minutes later, Legg forced a turnover and went flying into the offensive zone dumping a pass off to an open Kelly, who tallied his 12thgoal of the season.
In the closing quarter, Jacksonville expanded its advantage to as many as nine, 17-8. On the final play of the game, Koban ripped in his first career goal off of a feed from behind-the-net from Hurley with just :02 to go.
St. John's will ready for a midweek tilt on Long Island on Tuesday, when it travels to meet Stony Brook for a 6 p.m. contest at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
