Red Storm picks up sixth straight win on Sunday
As a team, the Red Storm (13-5) finished its 4-0 week batting .428 with 71 hits and 58 runs scored. Of the combined 71 base knocks against LIU and Quinnipiac, the Johnnies smacked 22 extra-base hits, including 16 doubles. St. John's pitching also dominated the opposition all week, pounding the strike zone with 42 strikeouts and boasting a 2.25 ERA as a group.
Mann unleashed a 3-for-3 day at the dish with his six RBIs and a pair of tallies. In his last four games, the Drury transfer slashed .692/.706/1.231 with a 9-for-13 showing, registering 11 RBIs and seven runs scored.
Freshman Jimmy Keenan drove in three runs on a 2-for-4 day at the dish while catcher Tate Ballestero added a 2-for-5 showing with three tallies of his own. Sophomore Jace Jeremiah rattled off a game-high four hits against the Bobcats, recording a run scored and an RBI.
Luke Orbon and David Glancy also chipped in a pair of runs on Sunday.
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead on a Mann sacrifice fly in the opening frame, Red Storm starter Sonny Fauci locked in with three straight strikeouts in the second to stifle the Bobcats.
Following a one-run top of the third to knot the game at one, the Johnnies unloaded a five-spot on Quinnipiac (5-11). St. John's loaded the bases on a Ballestero leadoff double, a Luke Orbon single and Glancy being hit by a pitch. Mann knocked in two of the three on a scorcher up the middle, giving the Johnnies a 3-1 edge. Keenan and Jeremiah laced RBI singles before the Red Storm freshman scored on a wild pitch for a five-run advantage, 6-1.
Fauci dominated the zone in the fourth, keeping the Bobcats off-balance with three more strikeouts, all swinging. The Old Bridge, N.J., native finished his six innings of work with a career-high eight strikeouts after allowing just one run on three hits.
Offensively, the Red Storm pushed one across in the home half of the fourth on an RBI double by Mann, bringing Glancy around to score.
St. John's unloaded six more runs in the bottom of the fifth, seeing its lead grow to double digits, 13-1. After rattling off three straight singles to open the frame, including an RBI base knock from Ballestero, Luke Orbon slapped an RBI double to left, putting the Red Storm ahead by eight. With runners on second and third, Mann shot a single up the middle, driving in two more runs for an 11-1 advantage. Keenan finished off the offensive barrage with a two-run double of his own, pushing the Johnnies' lead to 12.
Both teams were held off the board until Quinnipiac broke its scoring drought in the eighth with a three-run showing, slashing its deficit to 13-4.
The combination of Jake Alfaro and Chuck Sanzio came on in the ninth and slammed the door shut for the nine-run victory.
St. John's will hit the road for a midweek matchup against Wagner on Wednesday, March 22 with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park.
