Men’s Tennis to Host Villanova for Second BIG EAST Match of the Season

The Red Storm will finish its three-match week with a pair of contests against Yale and St. Francis Brooklyn
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 28, 2023) – The St. John's men's tennis team will host its second straight BIG EAST match at the Courts at St. John's on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. against Villanova.
Last week, the Red Storm opened BIG EAST play with a 5-2 win over Georgetown on Friday. In the first on-campus match of the season, two Johnnies notched a pair of wins on the day against the Hoyas. After a doubles wins with separate partners, Ryota Kaneda and Carl Gustafsson won their singles match in straight sets to collect their second win. The Red Storm completed the weekend with a 5-2 win at Brown. Despite dropping the doubles point, five Johnnies recorded singles match wins to give the Red Storm the victory.
Diogo Marques was named the BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week following his 2-0 weekend. He dropped just one game in a straight set victory against Georgetown on Friday. On Sunday he needed three sets to knock off Brown's top singles player.
In doubles play, the Johnnies have experimented with 17 different pairings this season. The duo of Adam Groves and Kaneda have played the most matches together and their six wins are the most on the team. Giuseppe De Camelis touts a combined 8-0 record in doubles play across four different partners. Gustafsson totals a team-high nine wins paired with five losses across five partners. De Camelis accounts for the two of the pairs as he is 3-0 teamed up with each Sergio Molina, and Anton Stendal.
In singles play, four Johnnies have reached double-digits win totals. New Mexico transfer Molina paces the team with 11 victories. Nishant Dabas, Gustafsson and Kaneda each have 10 wins for the second-most on the squad.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish is in his fifth season at the helm of the program. During his time with the Johnnies he has accumulated a 78-20 record. He has guided the Red Storm to three consecutive BIG EAST Championships. The Johnnies won the BIG EAST Title and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016 in his first season in Queens.
Villanova enters the match 6-9 over and 0-2 against conference opponents. The Wildcats are riding a two-match winning streak coming off a pair of wins Loyola (Md.) and Franklin and Marshall College last week on the road. Wednesday will by Villanova's 16th match, and its 13th on the road.
In the previous 14 meetings between the two programs, the Red Storm are 14-0 against the Wildcats, with nine sweeps. Last season, the Johnnies notched a 4-0 victory against Villanova in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals in their only meeting of the season.
St. John's will close out the week with a pair of matches on Friday and Sunday. The Red Storm will travel to No. 72 Yale for a Friday night match at 7 p.m. before returning to Queens to host St. Francis Brooklyn at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
