Freshmen Sydney Totarsky and Sabrina Seaton knock their first collegiate home runs
Brookville, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team edged LIU in an 8-6 battle on Wednesday afternoon at the LIU Softball Complex.
Three Red Storm (13-14, 4-2 BIG EAST) sluggers belted home runs in the midweek win. With the loss, LIU drops to 17-16 on the season.
The Queen of Doubles, London Jarrard tallied three hits including a double, for the third time this season. Jarrard was a triple shy of a cycle, driving in two and belting her fourth home run of the year.
Hannah Mearns was excellent in her second relief appearance within a week, securing her fourth victory of the season. In four innings out of the bullpen, the junior struck out four while allowing two runs on three hits.
The Red Storm struck first on a blast by Jarrard in the second at-bat of the game in the top of the first.
In the bottom half, the Sharks responded quickly tying the contest on an RBI-single. With runners at second and third and two outs, starter Carolina Zamudio struck out the next LIU batter to end the inning.
The contest wouldn't be tied for long as the Johnnies scored their second run of the game. A pair of hit by pitches and a bunt single by Bianco loaded the bases for Jarrard. Jarrard laced a single off the wall, only scoring one. The Sharks rolled a double play to end the inning and the Red Storm scoring threat.
The Johnnies scored for the third consecutive inning extending their lead to 4-1. Cassidy Stouffer drove a single into the outfield, and was then scored on the first collegiate home run off the bat of Sydney Totarsky.
LIU bounced back in the bottom the third, tying the score at four. The inning started on a leadoff fly out, before a pair of walks set up two runners in scoring position for the Sharks. An Alyssa Polemeni double and a wild pitch scored a pair of runs to bring the Sharks within one. With two outs, a Sharks RBI knotted the score at four.
After a scoreless fourth, Amy Mallah led off the fifth with a double down the line. An Anese Thompson single and a Totarsky hit by pitch loaded the bases with one out. Elanna Lysiak reached on a fielding error that scored Mallah to break the tie. Sabrina Seaton roped a sac fly to right, plating the second run of the inning for St. John's and extending the lead to 6-4.
Hannah Mearns retired the first six Sharks she faced. LIU broke through in the sixth, leading off the inning with a double to center. After she was bunted to third, LIU cut the deficit to 6-5 on a fielding error at second base.
In the top of the seventh, St. John's added a pair of insurance runs on Sabrina Seaton's first collegiate round-tripper to extend the lead to 8-5.
Mearns shut down the Sharks in the bottom of the seventh after allowing the leadoff hitter to score, clinching the 8-6 Red Storm victory.
The Red Storm will finish the week with a trip to South Orange, N.J. for a three-game set against Seton Hall.
