St. John’s Dominates at The Big Hurt on Saturday

Red Storm posted seven event wins in first home meet of the season
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field team put on an impressive performance at The Big Hurt at DaSilva Memorial Field on Saturday.
The Red Storm tallied seven event wins, five individual and two relays, in its first home meet of the 2023 outdoor season.
Cassandra Lemus-Sodji enjoyed an excellent day at DaSilva, winning the long jump with a leap of 5.57 meters. The freshman has recorded a jump of 5.40 meters or more in the past four meets going back to the indoor season. Lemus-Sodji also made her season debut in the 100-meter dash, posting a mark of 12.25 to finish second.
The Johnnies dominated the 2,000-meter steeplechase as Hannah Huleatt registered a winning mark of 8:03.32, and Gabriella Caronia finished second with a time of 8:25.47.
The Red Storm swept the podium in the 800-meter run courtesy of the freshmen trio of Ana Markovina, Ezgi Yasar and Leilani Robinson. Markovina secured the victory with a time of 2:18.80 while Yasar and Robinson tallied marks of 2:19.21 and 2:21.73 to finish second and third, respectively.
Mandana Vouillemin and Kayla Parker took care of business in the 400-meter hurdles with strong times of 1:07.20 and 1:17.79, respectively, to secure the top two spots on Saturday.
St. John's kept the solid day going in the relays, posting victories in the 4x100 and 4x400-meter races. Jordan Bruinton-Brown, Parker, Kara Sampath and Zamira Ysaac blew past the field in the 4x100-meter relay, logging a victorious time of 52.27. Two Red Storm teams competed in the 4x400-meter relay with the quartet of Blessing Assoumany, Quitterie Dujardin, Yasar and Tiffany-Ann Matturro recording a first-place time of 4:07.65.
Samantha Morillo-Martinez rounded out the Johnnies' winners at DaSilva with an outstanding performance in the shot put, winning the event with a toss of 14.18 meters. Martina De Buglio finished second with a heave of 11.95 meters, and Emma Woodcock and Desiree Pagan logged throws of 11.36 and 11.27 meters to secure third and fourth, respectively.
The Red Storm will return to action on Friday and Saturday when the Johnnies split up to compete in the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships and the Temple Invite.
