The Red Storm (17-12) and No. 19 UConn opened conference play in typical BIG EAST fashion as both teams were tied going into the late stages of each contest. The Huskies prevailed in Thursday's contest, 4-3, and in game one on Saturday, 8-3, but the Johnnies had the last laugh with its 9-7 victory in game two.
St. John's earned its first ranked victory since dominating No. 19 Georgia Tech, 11-1, at the Atlanta Classic on Feb. 16, 2020. It also marked the first home win against a top-25 squad since taking down former conference rival No. 8 Louisville, 6-5, on April 21, 2013.
Austin Machado and Tate Ballestero were instrumental in St. John's offense last weekend. Machado reached base in 10 of his 14 plate appearances, going 4-for-8 with five walks and a hit by pitch. The California native also tallied three runs scored and four RBIs to go with his first career home run. Ballestero led the team with four runs scored and matched his fellow backstop protector with four RBIs.
The Johnnies continue to find themselves among the nation's best with a BIG EAST-leading .301 batting average (41st in NCAA) as well as a .978 fielding percentage (32nd). Aaron Mann also paces the conference with his .391 mark at the dish while Nick Cirelli holds the top spot with a 0.83 WHIP (9th in NCAA) and a 1.88 ERA (19th).
The Red Storm will look to build on its 65-11 all-time record when the two squads meet for the 77th installment of the series on Tuesday. The Johnnies will also ride an eight-game winning streak against the Pride into Hempstead.
St. John's used a 16-hit effort to down Hofstra, 11-7, in its first meeting this season at the Jack. Eight of the team's nine starters tallied at least one hit or one run in the game. Blake Mayberry registered a career-high three hits and three runs in the March 8 contest while Marty Higgins rattled off three base knocks of his own and drove in a game-high four runs. Ben Adams secured his first win of the season with a perfect 1.1 innings of work and two strikeouts. Cirelli worked the Johnnies out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth to earn the save.
Hofstra (11-19) is also coming off a 5-4 series finale win against Charleston as Zach Bailey drove in four of the team's runs, including three on a fifth-inning double down the right-field line.
Senior catcher Kevin Bruggeman also produced a solid outing for the Pride on Sunday, posting three hits and a run scored. The Preseason All-CAA selection has been a doubles machine for Hofstra, logging 12 on the season, good for 45th in the nation. Bruggeman leads the team with 22 runs scored and is tied with Will Kennedy in hits (34).
Following Tuesday's contest, the Johnnies will welcome conference foe Seton Hall to the Jack for a three-game series this weekend. Game one on Friday is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
