Red Storm boasts an 88-74 all-time record over the Pirates
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 13, 2023) – The St. John's baseball team will look to get back on the winning track when BIG EAST foe Seton Hall visits Jack Kaiser Stadium this weekend, beginning on Friday at 3 p.m.
Saturday's contest is slated for 2 p.m. before the two squads wrap up the series with a 1 p.m. matinee on Sunday. All three games will have live stats and will be streamed on ESPN3.
The first 200 fans to arrive at Friday's game will receive a free pair of sunglasses. On Saturday, as part of the Red Storm Rally, the first 100 fans to attend will receive a Boardroom x St. John's tote bag. There will also be pregame giveaways from St. John's Athletics corporate sponsors located in between Jack Kaiser Stadium and Belson Stadium. Families are also encouraged to come out early as kids can pick up a St. John's fidget spinner or St. John's colorable picture frame with crayons.
The Red Storm (16-15, 1-2 BIG EAST) will look to rebound from its midweek setback to Hofstra. Jackson Tucker capitalized on three of the Johnnies' five runs against the Pride with a three-run shot in the seventh.
Jace Jeremiah and Aaron Mann also produced multi-hit performances in Hempstead and have been consistent over their last 10 starts for the Johnnies. The Red Storm shortstop boasts a .361 batting average since March 25, scoring eight runs and driving in five while Mann adds a .341 mark to go with eight tallies and 10 RBIs.
Sophomore Luke Orbon has also found steady success over the last 10 games, making nine starts and logging a team-best 15 hits with six runs and eight RBIs. Fellow classmate Austin Machado will look to build on his recent success, riding a 14-game reached base streak into Friday's contest.
St. John's and Seton Hall will square off in the 163rd all-time meeting on Friday. The Johnnies hold the series lead with a 88-74 mark, including a 37-29 record at the Jack. Since 2018, the Red Storm boasts a 9-3 mark over the Hall and will ride a three-game winning streak against SHU into Friday's contest. Of the 12 games, all but four have been decided by three runs or less.
In two games against Seton Hall last season, the Red Storm took down the Pirates, 8-6, in seven innings, followed by a 6-0 shutout in game two of the team's doubleheader on May 8. Tate Ballestero mashed in the two-game series, going 5-for-8 at the dish with a pair of doubles. Along with Tucker and Paul Orbon, the trio logged three tallies apiece. Kevin Michaels also paced the Johnnies with four RBIs in that series. Former Johnnie Brandon Backman tossed a complete-game shutout in game two, allowing just two hits and a walk.
Seton Hall (16-15, 2-1 BIG EAST) has split its last four games after winning three straight. The Pirates are coming off a 3-0 victory over NJIT that saw six pitchers combine for the shutout.
The Hall has been notorious for swiping bases this season, ranking second in the BIG EAST and 37th in the nation with 54 steals. William Gale (17), Max Viera (17) and Devin Hack (13) account for 87 percent of the team's steals.
Viera, a Northeastern transfer, also paces the Pirates with a .336 batting average, 22 RBIs, 21 runs scored and 40 hits, 11 of which have been doubles.
Relievers Michael Gillen and Richie Cimpric have been impressive for Seton Hall Head Coach Rob Sheppard, combining to allow just two earned runs in 29.2 innings across 19 appearances. Gillen has been impressive with an 0.56 ERA, 18 strikeouts and one walk.
