St. John’s Prepares for Virginia Challenge and Mark Young Invitational

Red Storm will split up and travel to Virginia and Connecticut
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field team is set to battle in two meets this weekend as one portion of the squad will head to the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., while the other part will head to New Haven, Conn., for the Mark Young Invitational, hosted by Yale University.
The Virginia Challenge will get underway on Friday, and the Mark Young Invitational will commence on Saturday morning.
Four Johnnies- Jamora Alves, Nia Holden, Tatyana McKenzie and Chinenye Onuorah- will compete at the Virginia Challenge.
Three of the four student-athletes lead the BIG EAST in at least one event. Alves paces the conference in the discus and shot put and has been in the top spot in both events since the end of March. McKenzie owns the best time in the 200-meter dash in the conference with a mark of 23.52 and ranks second in the 100 and 400-meter races. Onuorah boasts the best time in the 400-meter dash in the league at 54.45. Holden owns top-25 marks in the 400 and 800-meter events.
Brooklyn Chestnut will headline the sprinters heading to the Mark Young Invitational on Saturday. The junior ranks second in the BIG EAST in the 100-meter dash and fifth in the 200-meter dash with times of 11.81 and 24.34, respectively. Nora Haugen notched a season-best mark in the 400-meter dash last week at UConn Northeast Challenge with a time of 55.51. The freshman from Norway checks in at fourth in the 400 meters in the conference.
In the field events, Samantha Morillo-Martinez has continued to post solid results, ranking second in the BIG EAST in the shot put toss and fourth in the discus throw. Ismini Andreou has put together a strong season in her own right, sitting third in the league in the hammer throw with a toss of 50.60 meters.
