Women’s Tennis Set to Take on No. 5 Georgetown in BIG EAST Championships Quarterfinals

The Red Storm will open the quarterfinals at 12:45 p.m. on Friday against fifth-seeded Georgetown
QUEENS, N.Y. - The fourth-seeded St. John's women's tennis team will open the BIG EAST Tennis Championships presented by Jeep with its quarterfinals match against fifth-seeded Georgetown at 12:45 p.m. Friday afternoon.

The No. 4 Red Storm earned a first-round bye after receiving the fourth seed in this year's event, the league announced on Monday.
The Johnnies enter postseason on a one match winning streak, a sweep of Seton Hall on Friday. Out of the top three seeds, St. John's only played DePaul and have yet to play No.1 Xavier and No. 3 Creighton. The Red Storm were 5-1 against the teams seeded below themselves.
Yesica de Lucas has led the Red Storm combining for 29 total wins across singles and doubles play. Lalita Devarakonda has manned the top singles slot having played all but one of her matches in the first court. Devarakonda is 10-6 in the spot, with only two other players have a combined three decisions from that court. Mouna Bouzgarrou is the third Johnnie to total at least 10 wins in singles play. Bouzgarrou is 12-5 with an 11-2 record in the third court. The Monastir, Tunisia native is the only Johnnie unbeaten in conference play, 6-0.
Jayden Nielsen and de Lucas have consistently played in top court this season entering the postseason, 8-4 with six wins in the first court. The duo of Emilie Haakansson and Bouzgarrou have accrued 10 wins this season, the most by any Red Storm tandem. Bouzgarrou in total has combined for a team-best 14 doubles wins with Haakansson and de Lucas tying for the second most at 12.
Georgetown earned the fifth seed in this year's tournament after sporting a 12-9 overall record and went 5-3 in conference play. In the regular season, the Hoyas fell to DePaul, Creighton and St. John's all of which are seeded above them.
Earlier in the season, the Johnnies slipped past the Hoyas on a narrow 4-3 victory. The two programs last meet in the BIG EAST Championships in 2018 when the Red Storm advanced on a 4-2 win. St. John's is 2-0 against Georgetown in postseason play.
The Cayce Fitness and Tennis Center will host the BIG EAST Tennis Championships for the seventh consecutive year and it will be run from April 20-23.
The winner will advance to Saturday morning's semifinals at 9 a.m. to face the winner of top-seeded Xavier and the winner of the opening round match between No. 8 Marquette and No. 9 Villanova.
