Red Storm will look for its first conference series win of the season against the Bluejays
QUEENS, N.Y. – After powering past Fairleigh Dickinson in its midweek matchup, the St. John's baseball team will take on Creighton at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in a three-game series, beginning on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
First pitch for Saturday's contest is also slated for 7 p.m. ET, followed by a 1 p.m. ET matinee on Sunday. All three games will be streamed live on FloBaseball and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's (19-15, 2-4 BIG EAST) is coming off its second-highest run total of the season, taking down Fairleigh Dickinson, 19-5, in Teaneck, N.J., on Wednesday. The team's 19 runs are the most in a game since putting up 22 against LIU on March 15. The foursome of Marty Higgins, Jace Jeremiah, Blake Mayberry and Paul Orbon each drove in three runs on the afternoon. David Glancy, Jimmy Keenan and Aaron Mann chipped in with three tallies of their own. Starter Dylan Johnson earned his second win of the season with a perfect two innings of work, striking out two along the way.
The Red Storm has been an offensive force all season, ranking inside the nation's top 50 consistently with a .302 batting average (39th in NCAA). Mann continues to be a key addition, pacing the conference with his .405 mark at the dish (37th in NCAA). Jackson Tucker rounds out the NCAA Division I's top 50 with 17 stolen bases this season.
In conference play alone, Austin Machado paces the BIG EAST with a .607 on-base percentage and 10 walks through six league contests. The Cardiff by the Sea, Calif., native has been hot as of late, reaching base safely in 18 straight games.
St. John's and Creighton will square off in the 31st all-time meeting on Friday. The Bluejays hold an 18-12 advantage over the Red Storm yet the margin at Charles Schwab Field Omaha/TD Ameritrade Ballpark is only one game in favor of the host school (8-7). The Johnnies will look to snap their four-game skid against Creighton in the series opener.
The Bluejays (15-14, 3-3 BIG EAST) were unable to finish its nationally televised game against Nebraska on Tuesday due to lightning after both teams were tied at 4 in the bottom of the seventh.
Sophomore Noah Sailors has come on strong this season, pacing Creighton with a .336 batting average, 38 hits and 28 runs scored to go with 22 RBIs.
Dominic Cancellieri dominated Villanova two weeks ago after allowing just two baserunners before retiring the final 21 Villanova hitters he faced in a 2-0 win over the Wildcats. Cancellieri closed the game with a career-high 12 strikeouts over eight innings on 106 pitches. He also leads the BIG EAST and ranks 37th in the nation with a 12.5 K/9 ratio.
In true Creighton fashion, the team from Omaha leads the nation in fielding percentage at .985. The Bluejays will play small ball if necessary, logging 22 sacrifice bunts this season, good for the conference lead and 35th in the country.
