Red Storm will take on Scarlet Knights for the first time since 2012
QUEENS, N.Y. – After a hard-fought conference slate in Omaha, the Johnnies will look to rebound from its setbacks with a pair of midweek matchups at Jack Kaiser Stadium against Rutgers on Tuesday and Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday.
First pitch for both contests is slated for 3 p.m. on ESPN3 and live stats will also be available on RedStormSports.com
St. John's (19-18) is coming off three straight setbacks at Creighton. Sophomore Austin Machado closed out the weekend with a career-high four RBIs on Sunday, adding his second home run of the season. The Johnnies' catcher rides a 21-game reached base streak into the midweek contests, slashing .306/.506/.452 with 19 hits and 20 walks over that stretch. The Cardiff by the Sea, Calif., native has also registered 16 runs scored and 14 RBIs since March 18.
The Johnnies continue to rank among the BIG EAST's best, sitting second with a .297 batting average, a .394 on-base percentage and 82 doubles. Graduate transfer Aaron Mann is hitting .384 this season, pacing the conference while his 53 hits sit fifth.
The Red Storm will take on former conference foe Rutgers for the first time in 11 years. St. John's earned a 17-10 victory in its last meeting on April 7, 2012, thanks to a five-RBI day from Jeremy Baltz and Frank Schwindel going 3-for-6 with a home run and three RBIs of his own.
With the 81st installment slated for Tuesday, the Johnnies hold a 46-34 record over the Scarlet Knights, including a 22-14 mark at the Jack. St. John's will look to build on its three-game winning streak against Rutgers at home, taking a series sweep in its last meeting at Jack Kaiser Stadium in 2009. Pitching Coach George Brown had success in his final appearance against Rutgers, stifling the opposition across seven scoreless frames and facing five batters over the minimum while inducing a pair of double plays in a 2-0 shutout on March 21, 2008.
Rutgers (24-16) has been on a tear, winning five straight games and nine of its last 10 contests, including Big 10 series victories over Michigan and Northwestern. The opposition is hitting .239 against the Scarlet Knights this season while Tuesday's opponent has tossed three shutouts, good for the conference lead and 30th in Division I.
Having been efficient offensively this season, Rutgers has posted 33 sacrifice flies (1st in NCAA), 30 sacrifice bunts (14th) and 7.92 hits per game (22nd). Four players have started all 40 games in 2023 and are hitting over .300. Junior Evan Sleight paces the team with a .338 average and 11 home runs while 2022 Golden Spikes Award semifinalist Ryan Lasko continues to rake with a squad-best 38 RBIs and 45 runs scored.
After suffering a 19-5 loss at the hands of the Red Storm, Fairleigh Dickinson (24-13-1) is coming off a weekend sweep of Norfolk State. After a 6-5 victory in the series opener, the Knights unloaded a 12-5 win on Saturday before allowing just one hit in a 9-4 triumph on Sunday.
In last Wednesday's game against the Johnnies, the Knights surrendered 13 runs in the first two innings before falling by 14 in Teaneck. Marty Higgins, Jace Jeremiah, Blake Mayberry and Paul Orbon each knocked in three runs on the afternoon while David Glancy, Jimmy Keenan and Aaron Mann scored three times. Orbon also chipped in three hits, including his third home run of the year.
FDU's Hunter D'Amato remains the team leader in RBIs (46) and batting average (.385) while Brendan Medoro paces the team with a 3.92 ERA and is tied with Rich Racobaldo with six victories this season.
