Starter Mario Pesca tossed a season-high six scoreless innings
QUEENS, N.Y. – Despite seeing freshman starter Mario Pesca toss a season-high six scoreless innings, the St. John's baseball team dropped its Tuesday matchup with Rutgers, 3-1, at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Sophomore Austin Machado reached base safely for the 22nd straight game, going 2-for-3 with the team's lone RBI.
Pesca cruised through four frames, holding the former BIG EAST foe to just two baserunners on a hit and an error. The Bronx native also retired eight straight batters through the middle part of his outing before allowing his first baserunner with one out in the fifth.
The Red Storm was held to just three hits over the first five frames as Aaron Mann smacked a double to left-center in the second, Machado singled to center in the fourth and Jackson Tucker sent a base knock up the middle.
After a blank fifth frame, Pesca worked himself into trouble during the sixth inning, putting runners on the corners with one out. The freshman right-hander pounded the zone, forcing Chris Brito into a groundout at third, popping Evan Sleight up to left and ending the frame deadlocked at zero. The Johnnies' starter forced 11 groundouts and seven flyouts across his six scoreless frames of work.
St. John's threatened in the bottom of the sixth as David Glancy laced a leadoff double to left and advanced to third on a Tate Ballestero single over the shortstop's head. With runners on the corners, Machado ripped a single through the right side, knocking in Glancy from third for a 1-0 Red Storm lead.
With the Johnnies holding the Scarlet Knights to just three hits through eight innings of play, Rutgers broke through on its fourth hit of the afternoon. The former conference rival loaded the bases on a trio of walks in the ninth inning despite St. John's securing two outs in the frame. On the first pitch, Rutgers' Trevor Cohen hit a bases-clearing double to right for a 3-1 advantage.
The Scarlet Knights proved to be too much in the final inning as they held on for the two-run victory.
The Red Storm will return to the Jack on Wednesday when Fairleigh Dickinson comes to Queens for a 3 p.m. contest.
