The Red Storm and Hoyas will look to bounce back from midweek setbacks
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team will look to avenge its recent stretch of setbacks with a three-game slate in the nation's capital against Georgetown at Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. The series has been altered due to expected inclement weather and will begin on Saturday with a doubleheader slated to start at 3:30 p.m., followed by a single contest on Sunday tentatively set for 1 p.m.
All three contests will be streamed on GUHoyas.com and live stats can be found at RedStormSports.com.
St. John's (19-20, 2-7 BIG EAST) is coming off a slew of heartbreaking setbacks to Creighton, Rutgers and Fairleigh Dickinson, falling by two runs or less in each of its last three games.
Sophomore Austin Machado closed out the weekend with a career-high four RBIs on Sunday. The Johnnies' catcher rides a 23-game reached base streak into the weekend slate, slashing .324/.520/.456 with 22 hits and 23 walks. The Cardiff by the Sea, Calif., native has also registered 16 runs scored and 14 RBIs over that stretch while striking out just seven times in 97 plate appearances. Machado has also drawn a base on balls in 11 straight contests.
The Johnnies continue to find themselves among the BIG EAST's best, ranking second with a .292 batting average, a .391 on-base percentage and six doubles. Graduate transfer Aaron Mann is hitting .377 this season, pacing the conference while his 55 hits sit fourth.
St. John's will square off with BIG EAST rival Georgetown for the 89th time in program history, holding a 67-21 record over the Hoyas. The Red Storm also boasts a 33-13 mark on the road against its conference-founding counterparts. Both teams have split their last six games against each other.
The Johnnies will look to make it three straight wins over the Hoyas with a win in game one, having taken down Georgetown twice last season with an 11-8 victory and a 10-9 win in the 11th inning. In the one-run triumph on May 15 last season, Kevin Michaels smacked a 2-2 pitch to left for a solo homer in the ninth inning. Paul Orbon delivered the game-winning hit in the 11th to seal the Red Storm's series win in 2022.
Georgetown has split its last eight games after falling to Maryland, 16-3, on Wednesday afternoon. Despite the 13-run setback, the Hoyas relied on the long ball, getting solo shots from Owen Carapellotti and Christian Ficca.
Carapellotti, reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, has been a steady force for GU through 12 conference games this season, pacing the team with 18 hits and 14 runs scored to go with 13 RBIs.
Graduate student Ubaldo Lopez and senior Jake Hyde have continued to keep pace in the home run column for the second straight season, logging 14 apiece. Both players matched the program record for single-season homers with 19 in 2022.
Starter Jake Bloss has been a solid addition to the Hoyas' rotation from Lafayette, posting a 5-3 record with a 2.42 ERA (26th in NCAA) and 59 strikeouts across 52.0 innings of work.
As a team, the Hoyas have combined for five shutouts this season, eighth-most in Division I. Georgetown is also among the nation's top 50 with 62 home runs (40th) and 12 triples (43rd).
