David Glancy registers two homers, five RBIs in game one victory
WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 29, 2023) – The St. John's baseball team earned a doubleheader split with Georgetown on Saturday at Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.
Game 1
The Johnnies (20-21, 3-8 BIG EAST) snapped their five-game skid with a 9-4 victory in game one.
Redshirt junior David Glancy racked up a season-high five RBIs while smashing two home runs in his 3-for-6 showing at the dish. Freshman Jimmy Keenan also logged his second homer of the season with a three-run shot, finishing with a 2-for-5 outing in game one.
First baseman Aaron Mann also chipped in three hits and scored one run while leadoff hitter Anthony Brienza crossed home plate on two occasions.
The Johnnies took an early 1-0 lead after loading the bases on walks to Brienza and Tate Ballestero before Mann beat out an infield single. Designated hitter Austin Machado extended his reached base streak to 24 games with an RBI walk, knocking in Brienza from the third for a one-run edge.
The Red Storm tacked on a pair of tallies in the top of the second, seeing Glancy rip a two-run single to center for a 3-0 advantage.
Starter Xavier Kolhosser dominated in his three innings of work, seeing the minimum with a pair of strikeouts en route to his second win of the year. The right-hander forced the Hoyas to line into a 4-6 double play in the second inning, halting Georgetown's momentum early on.
Both teams were held off the board until Glancy belted a solo homer to left-center in the top of the fifth, pushing the Johnnies ahead, 4-0. St. John's continued to pour it on in the same frame after back-to-back singles from Mann and Machado. Jimmy Keenan took a 1-0 pitch to left-center for a three-run shot for a 7-0 advantage.
After Georgetown (24-20, 7-7 BIG EAST) put up two runs in the sixth and another two in the seventh, St. John's retaliated with a pair of tallies in the top of the eighth. Brienza took a pitch off the leg before Glancy drove a 2-1 pitch over the left-center wall for his second homer of the game, giving the Johnnies a five-run cushion, 9-4.
Junior reliever Ben Adams kept the Hoyas at bay with his 3.1 innings of work, allowing two unearned runs on five hits. The lefty also earned his first career save on Saturday afternoon.
Game 2
St. John's dropped game two of the doubleheader, 6-2, despite Blake Mayberry's second home run with the Red Storm.
The Johnnies struggled to get their offense going against Georgetown's starter Jake Bloss, who saw a stretch of eight straight strikeouts against the Red Storm. The Lafayette transfer also held the Red Storm without a hit through the first six frames.
The Hoyas scored two runs in the third inning as Jake Hyde drove in one on a sacrifice fly and Austin Kretzschmar hit an RBI double to right-center for a 2-0 lead. The Blue & Gray knocked in one more run in the fifth as Kretzschmar doubled again, bringing Ubaldo Lopez around to score and going up, 3-0.
Brienza broke up the no-hitter in the seventh inning, finding a seam through the right side on a 1-1 pitch.
Georgetown added three more tallies in the home half of the frame, scoring on a wild pitch before Marco Castillo hit a pinch-hit two-run homer for a 6-0 lead.
After Bloss departed in the eighth, the Johnnies cashed in with a two-spot. After Keenan was hit by a pitch, Mayberry smashed a two-run shot to dead center for his second home run of the season and pulled the Red Storm within four, 6-2.
Reliever Tim Cunningham kept the Hoyas off the board in the bottom of the eighth, providing a crucial strikeout to get out of a second-and-third, one-out jam. Georgetown proved to be too much and secured the four-run victory with a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth.
The Red Storm will return to action against the Hoyas tomorrow with a new game time tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m.
