QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field team will head to Villanova to battle against the best in the conference at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The three-day meet at Villanova Stadium will get underway on Thursday with the heptathlon events and the men's and women's hammer throw.
Tatyana McKenzie will lead the charge for the sprints team and will look to continue her run of dominance at the conference outdoor championships. In 2022, the graduate student won three events, including a conference title in the 100 meters with a time of 11.81. McKenzie is also poised to capture the most outstanding and high point performer honors for the second straight conference championships after earning the distinction at the indoor meet in February. The Kingston, Jamaica, native enters this weekend's event with the top time in the BIG EAST in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 23.52.
The Red Storm will send a strong group of sprinters to Villanova for the 400-meter dash, led by Chinenye Onuorah who boasts the top mark in the BIG EAST at 54.45. McKenzie ranks second in the league, and Nora Haugen sits fifth with a time of 55.51.
Meghan Ladd paces the pole vault team, owning a top-five mark in the BIG EAST in the event after setting a school outdoor record at the Temple Invite on April 7 by clearing the 3.51-meter bar. Berit Friedenbach comes in just behind Ladd and will look to build on her win in the pole vault last Saturday at the Tom Farrell Classic.
In the jump events, freshman tandem Cassandra Lemus-Sodji and Fia Viklund are coming off solid performances at the Tom Farrell Classic, capturing wins in the long jump and triple jump, respectively. Both athletes logged career-best jumps in their respective events and will look to carry that success over to this weekend's competition.
Jamora Alves and Samantha Morillo-Martinez will anchor the throws team, and both student-athletes are entering the meet with a wealth of momentum. Alves, the conference leader in the shot put and discus throws, logged a second-place result in the discus on Saturday. Morillo-Martinez has posted seven-straight podium finishes dating back to The Big Hurt on April 1 and was a critical piece in the Red Storm's win at the Mark Young Invitational in New Haven, Conn., on April 22.
