Jimmy Keenan belts third home run of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team dropped its Saturday contest to Xavier, 4-2, at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Freshman Jimmy Keenan smacked his first career home run at the Jack, bumping his season total to three.
David Glancy extended his reached base streak to 21 games with his two hits and an RBI on the afternoon. Paul Orbon also chipped in two hits, providing one run scored along the way.
Xavier (31-20, 12-5 BIG EAST) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening frame as the team's leading hitter Matt McCormick recorded an RBI base knock to right.
The Red Storm (25-24, 5-11 BIG EAST) retaliated in the bottom of the second on a towering 405-foot solo shot from Keenan, tying the game at one apiece.
The Musketeers chipped in three runs over the next two innings on a pair of sacrifice flies and an RBI groundout to take a 4-1 lead.
Both teams were held off the board in the fifth and sixth, largely in part to defensive plays on both sides. The Musketeers halted the Red Storm's threat in the fifth on a relay throw from right-center on Jace Jeremiah's two-out double, catching the Johnnies at the dish and keeping them off the board. St. John's responded with a 1-2-3 top of the sixth, ending the frame on a sliding catch in left-center by Paul Orbon.
Freshman Louis Marinaro came on in the seventh frame for starter Sonny Fauci, who tied his longest outing of the season with six innings of work. Marinaro stifled the Xavier lineup over the next three frames with just two baserunners allowed and three strikeouts on 45 pitches.
The Johnnies chipped away with a one-spot in the bottom of the eighth to pull within two. Following singles from Orbon and Anthony Brienza, Glancy roped an RBI single through the left side, bringing the lead runner across, 4-2.
In Xavier's final chance to bolster its lead, Aaron Mann snagged a scorching liner down with a runner on first, stepping on the bag all in one motion for the unassisted double play. However, the Musketeers proved to be too much for the Red Storm in the ninth, retiring the side in order and taking down the Johnnies in Queens.
St. John's will play its final home game of 2023 on Sunday, facing Xavier in a noon showdown at the Jack.
