Jackson Tucker knocks in the lone Red Storm run on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team closed out its 2023 home slate on Sunday, dropping the 5-1 affair to Xavier at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Jackson Tucker provided the lone RBI of the afternoon, part of a 2-for-4 day at the dish. Fellow sophomore Luke Orbon crossed home plate for the Red Storm's only tally on Sunday, going 1-for-3 at the plate.
Austin Machado also logged two hits on the afternoon, smacking a single and a double against the opposition.
After a hitless opening frame from both squads, Xavier (32-20, 13-5 BIG EAST) took an early 2-0 on a two-run single from Grant Stephenson.
The Red Storm (25-25, 5-12 BIG EAST) caught an unlucky break in the bottom of the second, seeing a fielder's choice turned into a double play after review due to a runner's interference on an aggressive slide into second base.
However, St. John's starter Tyler Roche settled in with back-to-back 1-2-3 frames in the third and fourth, part of retiring 10 of 11 batters he faced through the fifth inning and halting any momentum for the Musketeers. The Johnnies' hurler tossed his longest outing of the season, finishing his six frames of action with seven strikeouts, one shy of his career high.
Both teams were held off the board until Xavier successfully completed its double steal attempt, bringing Andrew Walker across for a three-run advantage in the top of the sixth. The Musketeers tacked on one more run in the seventh to bolster its 4-0 lead.
Reliever Mario Pesca worked himself in and out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, forcing reigning BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Jack Housinger to ground out to first base and ending the frame.
Tucker broke up Xavier's shutout in the bottom of the eighth, taking a 2-2 offering into left-center and knocking in Orbon to cut the Red Storm deficit to three.
After retaliating with one run in the ninth, 5-1, the Musketeers closed out the game and secured a four-run victory over the Johnnies.
St. John's will wrap up its regular season slate at Butler with the three-game conference series slated to start on Thursday at 3 p.m.
