QUEENS, N.Y. – Coming off back-to-back 13-3 victories in seven innings over Villanova and Iona, the St. John's baseball team will wrap up its regular season home slate with a three-game series against Xavier, beginning on Friday with a 6 p.m. start from Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Saturday's contest is slated for 3 p.m., followed by a noon first pitch on Sunday. All three games will be live streamed on ESPN3 and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com
St. John's (24-23) has won three of its last five games by a final score of 13-3 in seven innings. In those victories over the Gaels and Wildcats, the team has racked up 32 hits, 12 of which went for extra bases, while drawing 31 walks. The Red Storm logged 15 walks alone on Senior Day against Iona, the most in a game since recording 17 on March 14, 2012, against Fairleigh Dickinson.
Graduate transfer Aaron Mann smacked his fifth home run of the season in Wednesday's win, seeing his average remain atop the BIG EAST with a .380 mark, good for top-80 in the nation. The first baseman has also logged 21 multi-hit games this season while ranking second in conference with 65 base knocks.
Since the start of conference play against UConn on April 6, David Glancy has reached base safely in 19 straight games. Over that span, the Johnnies' outfielder has accumulated 24 hits, 14 for extra bases, with a team-best 25 runs scored to go with 12 RBIs.
Austin Machado has continued to be a steady presence in the middle of the Johnnies' lineup this season, reaching elite company with his ability to reach base safely. Through 38 appearances this season, the Californian boasts a .506 on-base percentage, ranking 31st in the nation. Should he remain over the .500 threshold at season's end, he will become the seventh player to do so since 1976 and the first since Mike Antico in 2019. Machado also paces the team with 39 walks.
St. John's and Xavier will meet for the 31st time on Friday, evenly splitting the all-time series at 15 apiece. The Red Storm will look to snap its five-game skid against the Musketeers. The Johnnies picked up its last win over Xavier on April 9, 2021, earning a 2-1 victory behind a six-inning, eight-strikeout showing from Nick Mondak while Joe Joe Rodriguez and Ethan Routzahn held the Musketeers without a hit over the final three frames. Marty Higgins also knocked in Vincent Bianchi for the game-tying run in the second inning on a single up the middle.
Xavier (30-19, 11-4 BIG EAST) enters the weekend slate on the heels of consecutive losses to Cincinnati and Indiana, dropping both by less than two runs.
West Virginia transfer Matt McCormick has been a staple of success for the Musketeers, leading the team with a .337 batting average and 13 homers. Teammate Andrew Walker has also contributed offensively with a .327 mark at the dish with a team-best 67 hits, 14 doubles, 44 runs and a second-best 43 RBIs. Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year Jack Housinger ranks 14th in the nation with 46 base on balls.
