Anthony Brienza tallies a career-high four RBIs in victory
Shortstop Anthony Brienza went off for a career-high four RBIs, part of a 2-for-4 showing with a run scored.
David Glancy provided a spark off the bench, chipping in a pair of RBIs and blasting his team-leading 13th homer of the year, part of a 1-for-2 day at the dish with two walks. The Johnnies' left fielder and teammate Ben Beauchamp registered three runs scored in the final contest of 2023.
Second baseman Luke Orbon crossed home plate twice and drove in a pair of runs while freshman Jimmy Keenan registered the sixth home run of his rookie campaign, finishing with a two-RBI day.
Paul Orbon also added two base knocks on Saturday, recording a run scored and an RBI.
The Red Storm (28-25, 8-12 BIG EAST) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame. After Luke Orbon was plunked on the first pitch of the contest and Tucker singled, Austin Machado ripped an RBI base knock to right for the game's first run.
Butler (11-43, 5-16 BIG EAST) responded with a two-run bottom of the first behind an RBI double from Carter Dorighi and a run-producing groundout by Scott Jones. The Bulldogs also added one in the second inning to go up by a pair, 3-1.
The Johnnies charged back with a three-spot in the third. Following a sacrifice fly by Jermaine White to bring home Luke Orbon, Glancy worked a five-pitch walk before Keenan belted his third home run of the weekend to put St. John's ahead, 4-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs knotted the score at four, capitalizing on a Red Storm miscue.
St. John's Tyler Roche and Butler's Clay Holzworth combined to allow just one baserunner through the fifth and sixth innings. The Red Storm starter wrapped up his six-frame outing with six strikeouts on 95 pitches.
The Johnnies reclaimed the lead for good in the seventh, posting a three-run frame. With Beauchamp on first, Brienza laid down a bunt and beat out an infield single while an errant throw on the play brought Beauchamp around to score, 5-4. Two batters later, Glancy mashed a two-run shot to left field and expanded the Red Storm advantage to three, 7-4.
Brienza came to bat with the bases loaded in the eighth, lacing a sacrifice fly to right and scoring Tate Ballestero. After a walk to Beauchamp that loaded the bases again, Luke Orbon slapped a three-run triple down the left field line for a 10-4 edge.
Glancy walked to begin the final frame before a Paul Orbon double to right knocked in the Red Storm center fielder to go up seven, 11-4. With nowhere else to put him after consecutive walks to Michaels and Beauchamp, Brienza stepped into the batters for the third straight inning and took a 1-1 pitch to right-center for a bases-clearing double, boasting a 14-4 lead.
The relief squad of Nick Cirelli, Tim Cunningham, Jake Alfaro and Andrew Castelluccio allowed a combined two base runners over the final three innings of the game, striking out four along the way. Paul Orbon reeled in the final out while tumbling in the left-center, holding onto the ball and securing the 10-run victory.
