Jace Jeremiah tallied a career-high four RBIs in Wednesday’s victory
The sophomore shortstop drove surpassed his previous high of three RBIs with his four against the Gaels (10-31), part of a 3-for-4 day at the dish with two runs scored.
Corner outfielders Jermaine White and Paul Orbon also set new personal bests with three tallies apiece. Ben Beauchamp and Blake Mayberry found their stride in Wednesday's contest, posting matching stats lines with a 1-for-3 showing, two RBIs and a run scored.
The Johnnies (22-21) matched its season-high of four sacrifice flies against Iona, the most in a game since recording four against Quinnipiac on March 18.
Starter Andrew Castelluccio worked himself in and out of a bases-loaded jam in the opening frame, keeping the Gaels off the board. The righty out of Ridgefield, Conn., picked up his first collegiate win with his three innings of shutout work on a bullpen day for the Johnnies.
In response, the Red Storm capitalized on their own bases-loaded opportunity in the home half of the first as Mayberry smacked a sacrifice fly to go up 1-0.
The Johnnies added another run in the second frame after Paul Orbon singled and swiped second. Jeremiah slapped a 3-1 pitch through the right side, bringing the left fielder around to score for a 2-0 advantage. Aggressive baserunning with two outs benefited St. John's as Jeremiah chugged around third and watched Iona's Nickolas Mora sail a throw over his first baseman's head for a 3-0 edge.
After both teams were held off the board in the third, Ballestero belted a 3-2 inside offering deep down the right-field line for a two-run shot that bumped the Red Storm lead to five.
St. John's utilized almost everything but hits in the next two frames. In the fifth inning alone, the Johnnies had four walks, one hit-by-pitch and one single from Jeremiah. White scored on a wild pitch, Beauchamp knocked in the elder Orbon on a sacrifice fly and Mayberry drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Johnnies ahead, 8-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Red Storm drove in two more runs on back-to-back sacrifice flies from Jeremiah and Beauchamp for a 10-run cushion.
After Iona broke the scoreless drought with three in the seventh, reliever Tim Cunningham came on with one out and a runner on first. The right-hander hurled just one pitch and forced a 6-4-3 double play to halt the Gaels' comeback.
In the bottom of the seventh, St. John's loaded the bases on two plunks and a single by Mayberry. After Paul Orbon walked with the bases juiced, Jeremiah sent everyone home with a two-run single to left, enforcing the 10-run rule after seven innings and lifting the Johnnies to a 13-3 victory.
The Red Storm will look to build on its winning momentum this weekend when Villanova visits Jack Kaiser Stadium for a three-game set, beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
