Red Storm tallied nine wins at DaSilva Memorial Field
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field team enjoyed a successful outing at the Tom Farrell Classic at DaSilva Memorial Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Storm piled up nine wins and 27 top-three finishes across 17 events in a dominant performance. Two seniors- Tiffany-Ann Matturro and Tatyana McKenzie- were honored on the field for their contributions to the program.
Brooklyn Chestnut closed out the regular season on a strong note in the 100-meter dash, winning the event with a solid time of 12.11. Cassandra Lemus-Sodji grabbed third with a mark of 12.16, a new personal best for the freshman.
In the 200 meters, Chinenye Onuorah captured the top spot, crossing the line at a personal-best 24.52. Chestnut finished second with a time of 24.55, and Nora Haugen secured third with a mark of 25.28. Blessing Assoumany posted a personal-best time of 58.40 in the 400-meter run.
The Red Storm dominated the 400-meter hurdles as Quitterie Dujardin, Zamira Ysaac and Kara Sampath swept the podium positions with times of 1:04.25, 1:04.27 and 1:07.48, respectively. Dujardin's and Sampath's marks were both personal bests. In the 800-meter run, Ana Markovina continued her excellent debut season in Queens, finishing second with a career-best time of 2:16.79.
Claire Cushing grabbed third in the 1,500 meters with a mark of 4:48.22. Hannah Huleatt and Gabriella Caronia finished second and third in the 2,000-meter steeplechase with personal-best times of 7:33.19 and 7:41.64, respectively. The Johnnies had an excellent day in the relays, winning both the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays with marks of 47.18 and 4:05.67.
In the pole vault, Berit Friedenbach cleared the 3.50-meter bar to finish first while Meghan Ladd climbed over the 3.35-meter bar to capture second place. Lemus-Sodji continued her solid performance on Saturday with a win in the long jump, leaping a distance of 5.74 meters to log a new personal best. Mandana Vouillemin tallied a distance of 5.32 meters to secure third.
Fia Viklund registered her first career win in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 11.40 meters. Ioanna Kyprianou and Rachel Hippolyte rounded out the top three with jumps of 11.15 and 11.14, meters, respectively. Ashley Sadler finished second in the high jump by clearing the 1.55-meter barrier, a new personal best for the freshman.
In the throwing events, Samantha Morillo-Martinez won the shot put with a heave of 13.62 meters and secured third in the discus throw with a toss of 43.83 meters. Jamora Alves captured second in the discus with a distance of 49.64 meters.
The Red Storm will travel to Villanova, Pa., to battle against the best in the conference at BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day meet will get underway on Thursday.
