Red Storm will play final non-conference contest
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team will host its second consecutive Ivy League opponent on Sunday afternoon when it welcomes Harvard for a 1 p.m. showdown.
Sunday's matinee from Belson Stadium will be streamed on ESPN+ with Ralph Bednarczyk and Marc Ernay on the call.
The Red Storm will enter the match with a 4-1-2 record on the season after a draw on Thursday night with Yale, 2-2.
The Johnnies and Bulldogs went back-and-forth as Jordyn Levy put the home side in front just eight minutes in. Yale's Anita Thorvaldsdottir logged a brace later in the opening half to give the visitors a one goal advantage at the break, 2-1. Nicole Gordon had the crucial equalizer in the 54th minute to bring the Johnnies level at Belson Stadium.
Jessica Garziano and Frederique St.-Jean recorded assists off a free kick on Levy's tally.
With her latest assist, Garziano tied the all-time program record for career assists, tying Jamie Clark, who tallied 27 helpers from 1997-2000. The midfielder now has five assists on the season, which leads the BIG EAST and ranks 17th in NCAA Division I.
After her third goal of the 2023 campaign, Levy is now knotted with Garziano for the team-lead in that category. The Indiana transfer has tallied a pair of game-winners which ranks tied for first in the conference.
St.-Jean has provided a significant boost to the Ian Stone's backline returning from an injury that kept her out the entire 2022 season. The redshirt junior has provided one goal and two assists while leading the squad in playing time logging 629 out of 630 possible minutes.
Harvard will head to Belson Stadium for the first-time ever and boast a 5-1-1 record on the year. In its last contest, the Crimson dominated Samford in Cambridge, Mass., 5-0, on Thursday evening. The Bulldogs has only allowed two goals entering Thursday's match before Harvard exploded for five. In its last three games, the Crimson have outscored its opponents, 12-2.
Harvard is led by Josefine Hasbo, the junior midfielder has registered four goals and three assists (11 points) during the first seven matches of the 2023 campaign.
Sunday's meeting marks the third meeting between the programs and the first-ever in Queens. Harvard leads the series, 2-0, both games went overtime and saw the Crimson prevail in extra time. The last contest occurred on Sept. 5, 2021. The Red Storm trailed 2-0 before goals from Isabelle Aviza and Brooke Boyd brought the Johnnies level. Hannah Bebar provided to overtime game-winner to lift the Crimson to a 3-2 victory.
Sunday's contest marks the final non-conference contest for the Johnnies as they will begin BIG EAST play on Thursday against the reigning league champions No. 10 Georgetown.
