St. John’s Sweeps LIU, 7-0, For Third Straight Win

Red Storm takes down the Sharks for the third consecutive season
The St. John's men's tennis team swept LIU, 7-0, on Thursday afternoon at Cunningham Park, finishing off an impressive opening week of the 2024 season.
The Red Storm (3-0) won its third straight match in convincing fashion, tallying off their second sweep in as many days. St. John's notched a 7-0 victory over Quinnipiac on Wednesday at the USTA National Tennis Center.
St. John's has now beaten LIU (0-1) in three consecutive seasons.
The Johnnies picked up the team doubles point decisively. Martin Bugaj and Carl Gustavsson were paired together for the first time in dual-match play and took care of business against Leon Harder and Victor Sjostrom, earning the 6-2 win. Francisco Bascón and Leonardo Mileikowsky, another new pairing, clinched the point for the home team after taking down Philip Hilble and Danila Ishchanka, 6-2.
Bugaj picked up his first singles win of the year to give the Red Storm a 2-0 lead, defeating Ales D'Anna in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Leon Petko made his first appearance of the season in dual-match singles play and made the score 3-0 after a commanding victory against Lucas Hornug, 6-3, 6-0.
The lead was pushed to four on the No. 5 court as Danilo Raicevic improved to 3-0 on the season in singles play, getting the better of Ishchanka, 6-2, 6-4. Gustavsson made his first appearance of the season on the No. 1 singles court and turned in a strong performance, beating Hilble in two sets, 6-3, 6-4. Gustavsson improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in singles play in 2024 with the win.
Mileikowsky and Ryota Kaneda picked up the final two points for the Johnnies on the No. 3 and No. 4 courts, respectively. The two athletes finhed off the second straight sweep for the reigning BIG EAST Champions. Both Mileikowsky and Kaneda improved to 3-0 in singles play on the young season.
After three matches in three days to start the season, the Johnnies will have three days off before returning to action on Sunday against Cornell. First serve in the Red Storm's first road contest of the year is set for 1 p.m. in Ithaca, N.Y.
