Freshman Marco Cinotti picks up singles win in Johnnies debut
Freshman Marco Cinotti earned a victory in his Red Storm debut and helped the St. John's men's tennis team defeat Marist, 6-1, on Thursday at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The Red Storm took the team doubles point and then won five singles matches to down the Red Foxes (0-2) for the seventh time in program history.
St. John's improved to 4-1 on the season with the win, and a perfect 4-0 in matches in Queens.
After the Johnnies got a win by default on the No. 3 doubles court, Francisco Bascón and Leonardo Mileikowsky clinched the team point for the home squad, taking down Alejandro Casteneda and Oliver Thoeny, 6-4. The St. John's duo picked up their first win as doubles partners on the season.
In singles play, Mileikowsky improved to 4-1 on the year and 2-0 on the No. 4 court, earning a dominating victory over Nick Koulisis, 6-1,6-1.
Danilo Raicevic maintained his perfect singles record in 2024 and gave the Red Storm a 3-0 lead after getting the better of Nick Suhanitski, 6-3, 6-3. The sophomore from Montenegro has now won all four singles matches he has played this season.
In his first appearance in a St. John's uniform, Cinotti impressed on the No. 3 singles court against Jose Catala, earning a 6-3, 7-5 decision and giving the Johnnies their fourth point of the day.
Martin Bugaj made it 5-0 in his first appearance on the No. 1 singles court this season. The South Alabama transfer picked up his second singles win in a three-set battle with Castendea, 6-3, 3-6, 10-4.
Ryota Kaneda was awarded a win on the No. 6 court by default, earning the sixth and final point of the day for the Red Storm.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Saturday in Hannover, N.H. to take on Dartmouth. First serve from the Boss Tennis Center is set for 11 a.m.
