St. John’s Looks to Defend Metropolitan Championship Title

The Red Storm won the race for the first time in program history last season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's cross country team will look to defend its title at the Metropolitan Championship hosted by NJIT on Saturday in Newark, N.J. The 5K race will begin at 10 a.m. at Branch Brook Park.
Last year, the Red Storm earned its first Metropolitan Championship in program history after racking up 68 total points. The program has finished second or better in the last three iterations of the meet.
All eight runners finished in the top 50 for St. John's at last year's race. Claire Cushing set a personal-best 5K time of 17:44.93 for a third-place finish.
St. John's is set to race against 18 other schools including BIG EAST foe Seton Hall on Saturday.
One week ago, the Red Storm earned two top 100 finishes en route to a 29th place result at the Paul Short Run's "Brown" Race.
Leyre Campo de Quevedo paced the Red Storm for the second straight meet to start her career in Bethlehem, Pa. The Spain native finished in 22:05.7 for 21st out of 286 runners in her collegiate 6K debut. Ezgi Yasar finished second on the Johnnies with a 22:58.1 mark for 78th.
Ana Dobsa and Naiara Garcia completed the race in 24:54.6 for back-to-back 231st and 232nd place marks. Cristina Stanescu and Brenin Mahon rounded out the Johnnies' effort in their second meet of the year. Stanescu notched a finishing time of 27:32.4 for 275th, while Mahon completed the race in 27:45.8 for 277th.
