St. John’s Opens Indoor Track and Field Season by Competing at the Youree Spence-Garcia Invitational

The Red Storm won five events at its season-opening meet
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The St. John's track and field team kicked off its indoor season by hosting the Youree Spence-Garcia Invitational in Staten Island, N.Y. As a team, the Red Storm racked up five wins and 17 top-three finishes at its season-opening meet.
Danella Dawkins claimed the first win of the season for the Red Storm, pacing the 60-meter hurdles in 8.69 seconds. Jerese Allwood staked a seventh-place finish in the event in her collegiate debut, ringing up a 9.35-second mark.
The Red Storm showed out in the 200-meter dash, taking both first and second place. Chinenye Onuorah won the event on a time of 24.50 seconds while Amarachukwu Obi nabbed second place off a 24.82-second effort.
In the 300-meter dash, Onuorah logged a second-place finish on a career-best time of 38.50 seconds. Nyla Henderson ran to a seventh-place result on a 40.49 finish, in her first race.
Naiara Garcia earned the first win of her career in the 1,000-meter run. The freshman logged a 3:00.20 finishing time in her first race in a St. John's uniform.
Fia Viklund started her junior campaign by taking home a gold medal in the triple jump. The Sweden native registered a career-record 11.79-meter leap at Ocean Breeze.
Jamora Alves kicked off her junior season with a personal-record 14.85-meter throw for first place in the shot put. Juliet Smith finished in third with a 12.79-meter heave and Desiree Pagan placed sixth, after producing a mark of 11.67 meters.
Alves followed up her gold medal by earning silver in the weight throw off a personal-best 16.61-meter toss. Pagan, Martina de Buglio and Smith all finished consecutively in fifth-seventh. Pagan posted a throw of 14.99 meters, while de Buglio and Smith earned 14.88-meter and 14.17-meter efforts, respectively.
Leyre Campo de Quevedo picked up right where she left off in cross country, leading the Johnnies with a second-place effort in the 3,000-meter run. The freshman paced the race in 10:03.15. Ezgi Yasar provided a seventh-place effort in the event with a finishing time of 10:41.78.
Colette Metcalf started her senior season with a second-place finish in the pole vault. The West Milford, N.J., product registered a 3.40-meter leap while Virginia Lloret took third place in her career-debut with a 3.25-meter vault. Berit Freidenbach matched Lloret's mark of 3.25 meters, to tie for third.
In the long jump, Cassandra Lemus-Sodji picked up a silver medal after notching a leap of 5.71 meters. Jade Dockery logged an eighth-place result from a 5.23-meter jump, in the first competition of her career.
The Johnnies impressed in both the 4x800-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay at their annual invitational. The 800-meter relay squad of Campo de Quevedo, Ana Dobsa, Garcia and Mia Torres took second place off a 10:13.58 effort. In the 400-meter relay, Ryana Dennis, Djassi Dean, Henderson and Ciara Wiltshire finished in third, earning a bronze medal off a 3:52.06 result.
Obi posted a third-place effort on a time of 57.42 in the 400-meter dash. Dennis and Jalen Jackson finished back-to-back in fifth and sixth, respectively. In the first meet of her career, Dennis paced the race in 58.25 while Jackson finished in 59.08 seconds.
In the first race since her NCAA Championship appearance, Nora Haugen took third place in the 600-meter run. The junior notched a mark of 1:29.00 in her event debut with the Red Storm. Leilani Robinson came in fifth after completing the race in 1:34.64.
Ashley Sadler matched her career-best of 1.60 meters for a third-place leap in the high jump. Ruth Smith came in sixth off a 1.55-meter jump.
Following Winter Break, the Red Storm will return for Columbia's Dr. Sander Invitational at the Armory in Manhattan on Jan. 24.
