St. John’s To Compete in the Dr. Sander Invitational

The Red Storm will return to action after a seven-week break
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following a seven-week break, the St. John's track & field team will return to action against some of the nation's top programs at Columbia's Dr. Sander Invitational inside the Armory in Manhattan. The two-day meet will kick off on Friday morning at 9 a.m. and conclude on Saturday evening at 5 p.m.
The entirety of the meet will be streamed on ArmoryTrack.com. NBC's Peacock will stream the meet from 12:50 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Live Results will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Columbia's annual indoor home meet has been a staple of the Red Storm's schedule, as the team has competed in the event in six of the last seven seasons.
The Red Storm will return to action for the first time since Dec. 7, when it hosted the Youree Spence-Garcia Invitational at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. The Johnnies took home five gold medals at its annual home meet, winning the 60-meter hurdles, the 200-meter dash, the 1,000-meter run, the triple jump and the shot put. The squad also racked up 17 top-three finishes.
Danella Dawkins impressed in her first appearance with St. John's, picking up a win in the 60-meter hurdles. The graduate student paced the race in 8.69 seconds in the Johnnies' first event of the season.
Chinenye Onuorah showed out in the first meet of her junior season, staking first-place finishes in the 200-meter and 300-meter dashes. The Thailand product won the 200-meter dash on a finishing time of 24.50 seconds, before breezing through the 300 meters in a personal-best 38.50 seconds.
Jamora Alves came back to Queens with a gold and silver medal, picking up podium finishes in the shot put and weight throw. The talented thrower kicked off her junior season with a personal-record 14.85-meter toss for first place in the shot put. A few hours later, Alves finished with a second-place effort in the weight throw on a personal-best 16.61-meter hurl.
In the first meet of her track & field career, Naiara Garcia went to the top of the podium in the 1,000-meter run. The freshman logged a 3:00.20 finishing time in her first race in a St. John's uniform.
Fia Viklund kicked off her junior season in impressive fashion, securing a gold medal in the triple jump. The Sweden native registered a career-record 11.79-meter leap at Ocean Breeze.
Following this weekend's meet, the Red Storm will be back in action at the Indoor Metropolitan Championships on Jan. 31, inside the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.
