Jamora Alves earned a gold medal in the weight throw
NEW YORK – After a seven-week break, the St. John's track & field team returned to action at Columbia's Dr. Sander Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Armory in Manhattan. As a team, the Red Storm registered a win in the weight throw and earned four top five finishes.
Jamora Alves picked up a gold medal for the Red Storm, winning the open weight throw. The junior registered a career-best toss of 16.68 meters in the event. Juliet Smith placed fifth off a personal-record 15.85-meter heave.
Alves continued to have a successful weekend, this time earning a bronze medal in the shot put on Saturday. The Grenada native put together a personal-record throw of 15.23 meters for third in the event.
In the 4x400-meter relay, Amarachukwu Obi, Chinenye Onourah, Nyla Henderson and Nora Haugen claimed a silver medal. The group earned a finishing time of 3:42.62 for second place in their first race together this season.
Onourah posted a finishing time of 55.58 seconds in the 400-meter invitational for seventh place. In their 400-meter event debuts, Henderson finished in 15th place off a mark of 58.06 seconds while Djassi Dean came in 33rd off a finishing time of 59.96.
Colette Metcalf rang up an eighth-place finish in the open pole vault on a mark of 3.35 meters, while Berit Friedenbach placed 12th with a 3.20-meter vault. In the pole vault invitational event, Virginia Lloret recorded a personal-best 3.30-meter leap to end in ninth place.
Obi posted an eighth-place effort in the 200-meter run. The graduate student paced the race in 24.36 seconds on Saturday morning.
In the long jump, Cassandra Lemus-Sodji produced a 5.72-meter leap, finishing in eighth place overall.
Jerese Allwood staked a personal-best 9.21-second finish for ninth place in the open 60-meter hurdles.
Leyre Campo de Quevedo logged a season-best time of 10:01.21 in the 3,000-meter run for 25th. Ezgi Yasar shined in the mile, setting a new career-record time of 5:13.93 for 33rd in the event.
In the 800-meter invitational, Naiara Garcia and Maddie Kelso-Heap made their event debuts, finishing in 2:13.99 and 2:16.13, respectively. Leilani Robinson posted a personal-best effort of 2:17.47 in the competition.
The Red Storm will be back in action next weekend when it takes part in the Indoor Metropolitan Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.
