Red Storm pick up its eighth win of the season
The St. John's men's tennis team picked up an impressive 4-0 victory against Penn State on Saturday at the Milstein Family Tennis Center.
With the win, the Red Storm (8-1) have won eight of its first nine games for the second consecutive year.
St. John's picked up its third win all-time against Penn State and beat the Nittany Lions for the first time since 2012.
The Johnnies took the first two matches in doubles play to earn the team point and won the first three singles contests to finish off the sweep.
Carl Gustavsson and Martin Bugaj got things started for the Johnnies in doubles play, beating Alexander Sterin and Ritvik Nadikude in convincing fashion, 6-1. Bugaj and Gustavsson have now won three matches together this season.
Reigning BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week Leon Petko and Ignacio Vinas improved to 6-0 as a pair in 2024, clinching the doubles point for the Johnnies on the No. 2 court by taking down Jack Martuccio and Ari Cotoulas, 6-4.
In singles play, Gustavsson gave the Red Storm a 2-0 lead on the No. 2 court, defeating Nolan Ranger in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. With the win, Gustavsson remains undefeated in singles play this season, winning all seven matches he has competed in.
The lead was pushed to three when Danilo Raicevic improved to 6-0 in singles play on the year, earning a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Nadikude.
Ryota Kaneda picked up his third win in as many tries on the No. 5 court in 2024, taking down Sterin, 6-2, 6-1, completing the 4-0 shutout against the Nittany Lions.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Wednesday when it welcomes Arizona to the USTA National Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
