Jillian Archer finished with her ninth double-double of the season
WASHINGTON D.C. – The St. John's women's basketball team fell in a tight BIG EAST contest at Georgetown, 51-43.
The two squads kept little distance between them in a low-scoring affair in the nation's capital. The contest was kept within five points until the final 5:13 of the fourth quarter at McDonough Arena.
Jillian Archer logged her ninth double-double of the year finished with 10 points and tied a season-high with 14 rebounds. In her two appearances back at her former school, the graduate student has collected 15.5 boards per game. The forward has double-figures in scoring for 10 consecutive games.
Unique Drake shot 8-for-8 from the charity stripe and logged a team-high 14 points on Tuesday night. Her eight made free throws matched the career-high she previously set at Yale on Dec. 21.
Ber'Nyah Mayo ended the game with eight points and five steals, tying a season-high for the second-straight game. Over the last three games, the point guard is averaging 4.7 steals per game.
Georgetown's Brianna Scott led all scorers with 21 points on 10-for-13 shooting from the floor. The center also tied for the team-high with nine boards.
The Red Storm shot over 80 percent from the free throw line for the third-straight game going 12-for-14 (85.7 %) from the charity stripe.
The contest opened as a defensive-minded low-scoring affair. Archer pulled down four of the team's first five rebounds and closed out the opening frame with eight. Jailah Donald rattled home a triple off a pass from Drake for the final bucket of the quarter to give the Johnnies a 18-13 edge at the end of the opening quarter.
Archer really heated up in the middle of the second frame scoring three consecutive baskets for the Johnnies. Mayo got to the rim on two-straight possessions cashing in on two floaters off the window. St. John's (15-13, 9-7 BIG EAST) went to the locker room with a 23-20 lead.
Mayo started the second half by immediately stealing the initial in-bounds pass and darting to the rack for an easy two. Midway through the third frame, the Hoyas took the lead for the first time after a lay-up from Scott. Phoenix Gedeon finished a bucket and absorbed the contact off a dish from Mayo to knot the score at 31. Drake sunk a mid-range jumper to regain the advantage before a Scott 3-pointer gave Georgetown a lead it never relinquished.
In the final frame, the Hoyas quickly jumped out to a five-point lead, 40-35. Mayo drew a foul after getting out on the break after her fourth steal of the night, she made both to cut it to three, 40-37. Georgetown (16-10, 7-9 BIG EAST) continued to respond after Mya Bembry drilled consecutive jumpers to give the Hoyas their largest lead of the game, 44-37.
In the final minutes, a Drake mid-range trimmed the deficit to six, 49-43, with 1:27 left to play. The Johnnies force a steal, but Mayo was unable to get three lay-up attempts to go after grabbing two offensive boards. Once the Hoyas got possession back, they ran out the clock.
