The Red Storm and the Bobcats have not faced off since 2009
The St. John's lacrosse team will play the second game of its 2024 season on Saturday against Quinnipiac at DaSilva Memorial Field. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Ryan Forte on the call and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com. Schedule posters will be available for all fans in attendance.
The Red Storm fell short in its season opener against NJIT last Saturday at DaSilva, 10-8. Redshirt freshman Adrian Nowak impressed in his Johnnies debut, scoring three goals on just five shots on target. Nowak became the first St. John's freshman to tally a hat-trick since Brian Kelly scored three against Siena on March 11, 2022. Caleb Zuhoski scored a goal against the Highlanders, extending his team-high point streak to five games and team-best goal streak to three games.
Freshmen Dylan Lee and Richie Reid each scored a goal this past Saturday in their colligate debuts. Luke Mangan and Bobby Seel also put one in the back on the net for the Red Storm against NJIT while Caiden Vlasimsky tallied a team-best two assists. Jack Lutfi and Brady Rauner recorded helpers for the Johnnies in the opener.
Defensively, Kyle Munson was solid between the pipes in the Johnnies' season opener, stopping 10 of the 20 shots he faced against the Highlanders. Munson has now made 10 or more saves in three straight games, dating back to 2023. Since the beginning of last season, the redshirt junior has notched a save percentage of at least 50 in seven games. Towson transfer Jordan Hayes recorded a career-high and team-best three caused turnovers in his first action for St. John's.
The Red Storm outshot the Highlanders, 44-38, and excelled on the clear, converting on 24-of-26 attempts.
This weekend's matchup with Quinnipiac will be the first time the two programs have met since the Red Storm beat Bobcats 15-8 on Feb. 21, 2009. The Johnnies lead the all-time series, 2-1.
Quinnipiac opens its season on Saturday against the Red Storm following a 7-7 campaign in 2023. The Bobcats' season last year was highlighted by an 11-10 win over then-No. 13 Brown on Feb. 18. Quinnipiac earned the No. 6 seed in the 2023 MAAC Tournament and fell to third-seeded Marist, 29-19, in the opening round.
Last season, the Bobcats ranked second in the MAAC, scoring 13.1 goals per game, and second in man-up offense, converting 43 percent of its extra-man opportunities. The man-up attack was led by Dylan Donnery, whose eight goals on the advantage was seventh most in the nation.
In addition to Donnery, who tallied 43 points in 2023 and finished third on the team in goals, Quinnipiac returns its top-two point scorers from a season ago. Preseason All-MAAC Team selections John DeLuca and Steven Germain combined for 55 goals and 99 points last year. Defenseman Ryan Downing and midfielder Jake Tellers also received preseason first team honors from the league.
Following this weekend's matchup with Quinnipiac, the St. John's will have a quick turnaround when it faces Hofstra on Tuesday. Faceoff for the Red Storm's first road contest of the year is set for 6 p.m. from James. M. Shuart Stadium.
