The Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., native helps Red Storm erase five-run deficit with game-winning RBI single
After cutting the deficit to one with a four-run seventh inning, the Red Storm (10-4) carried the momentum into the final frame. Outfielder Jackson Tucker drew a walk before moving to third on a Ben Beauchamp knock underneath the outstretched glove of Evan Goforth at third. Stony Brook (7-8) did not want to face Jimmy Keenan, who belted a two-run shot in the seventh, intentionally walking the Red Storm catcher and loading the bases. Paul Orbon drew a walk with the bases juiced to tie the game at eight.
In the ensuing at-bat, Cohall, who made just his second career start on Tuesday, fell behind 0-2 in his final bat. On his third offering from Stony Brook's reliever, the Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., native drilled an RBI single into center field and sent the Red Storm home with a 9-8 victory.
The walk-off victory marks the first since St. John's took down UAlbany 367 days prior with an identical 9-8 victory on March 12, 2023.
Keenan produced his sixth straight multi-hit effort, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Shortstop Luke Orbon also put forth a multi-RBI game on Tuesday, logging three RBIs with a double and a triple. Beauchamp finished with three runs scored while going 2-for-4 at the dish.
Relievers Tim Cunningham and Ben Adams have continued to be lethal out of the bullpen for the Johnnies. The veteran arms combined to toss three scoreless innings, neither allowing hit.
Stony Brook's Erik Paulsen put the visiting team ahead in the first frame with a solo home run into the batter's eye in center field for a 1-0 lead.
The Johnnies quickly responded in the home half of the opening stanza after a walk to Tucker and Beauchamp reaching on an error. Keenan scorched a 3-1 offering into the left-center gap, clearing the bases on his two-run double and giving the Johnnies a 2-1 advantage.
The Seawolves retaliated with a three-spot in the top of the second and another tally in the third to claim a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the third, St. John's chipped away at its three-run deficit with one run after Beauchamp took a pitch off the elbow. Luke Orbon took a 2-1 delivery the other way, painting the left-field wall with an RBI double and pulling the Johnnies within two.
Following a blank fourth frame, Stony Brook bumped its lead to five, 8-3, on a wild pitch and a two-run double from Nicholas Solorzano in the fifth inning.
Both teams were held scoreless until the Red Storm duo of Orbon and Keenan unloaded a four-run bottom of the seventh. Following back-to-back singles from Jayder Raifstanger and Anthony Brienza, the Johnnies' shortstop fought off three straight pitches before driving a two-run triple to right-center and cutting the deficit back to three. After working a 3-2 count in the proceeding at-bat, Keenan belted a 407-foot missile over the left-center wall to make it an 8-7 game.
Jed Boyle came on in the ninth and faced the minimum, logging a strikeout and picking up his first win with St. John's.
Cohall capitalized with his lone hit of the game in the ninth inning, proving to be the most important with his game-winning single to take the one-run victory.
The Red Storm will return to action this weekend when Rider comes to town for a three-game series beginning on Friday. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is slated for 3 p.m.
