The Red Storm logged 19 runs on 18 hits in the 16-run triumph
The Red Storm's 19 runs mark was the most runs since taking down Butler, 24-5, on May 18, 2023.*
Jackson Tucker went 3-for-3 at the dish with a triple, a double and four walks. The Staten Island, N.Y. native also scored three runs and drove in two RBIs. Anthony Brienza followed up by matching his career-high with three hits in five plate appearances. The redshirt senior matched Tucker's totals by scoring three runs and knocking in two.
Jimmy Keenan extended his multi-hit game streak to seven with a two-hit day that included a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ben Beauchamp matched the Red Storm catcher with three RBIs.
Xavier Kolhosser earned his fourth win of the season, tossing five innings and only allowing three runs. The redshirt sophomore struck out three and allowed no walks.
The Red Storm jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first frame. After a leadoff triple from Tucker, Beauchamp and Blake Mayberry delivered back-to-back RBI singles on 0-2 pitches to take a two-run edge.
St. John's doubled its lead in the bottom of the second as Aidan Cohall walked and Garrett Scavelli laced a single through the left side. Following a fielder's choice, Tucker smacked a double over the center fielder's head and knocked in a pair of runs for a 4-0 lead.
The Johnnies continued to pounce in the home half of the third, rattling off three straight hits to open the frame. Keenan roped a double to left-center and advanced to third on a Luke Orbon single to put runners on first and third. Paul Orbon turned on his offering and smacked a single to left to bring home Keenan for a 5-0 lead. Two batters later, Brienza pulled a double the same way, knocking in the younger Orbon for a six-run advantage.
Rider chipped away at the Red Storm lead with two in the fourth and one in the fifth, slashing its deficit in half, 6-3.
The Red Storm unloaded eight runs in the bottom of the fifth after loading the bases on consecutive singles from Scavelli and Brienza to go with a walk from Tucker. Beauchamp delivered again with a two-run double to left before a wild pitch knocked in Tucker from third to claim a 9-3 lead. Three pitches later, Keenan ripped a 2-0 offering 410 feet for a three-run shot and a 12-3 advantage. Brienza knocked in the seventh run of the frame with a single through the right side to go up double digits.
The Johnnies poured it on with one run in the sixth and a four-spot in the seventh with two bases-loaded walks and a pair of RBI singles.
Reliever Louis Marinaro dominated out of the pen, allowing just one hit in his three innings of work. The left-handed sophomore also struck out three batters after taking over for Kolhosser. TJ Winn came on in the ninth and shut the door on seven pitches.
St. John's will return to action on Saturday for game two against Rider for a 1 p.m. contest at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
*Article previously stated the 19 runs were the most runs in a game since it took down LIU, 23-3, exactly a year ago on March 15, 2023. That was factually incorrect.
