St. John’s Dominates at The Big Hurt

The Red Storm earned 14 event wins
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track & field team took home 14 wins at the program's first outdoor home meet of the season, The Big Hurt, on Saturday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens, N.Y.
The Johnnies claimed their first win of the day in the 2,000-meter steeplechase as Claire Cushing paced the race in 7:16.26. Gabriella Caronia logged a 7:21.63 mark for second place in the event.
Cristina Stanescu grabbed the first win of her collegiate career in her 1,500-meter run debut by earning a result of 5:03.90.
Ava Spencer and Karese Lloyd notched first and second-place efforts in the 100-meter dash, respectively. Spencer registered a 12.46 mark while Lloyd sprinted the race in 12.57.
Spencer picked up a second win in the 200-meter dash for the Red Storm, finishing the event in a personal-best 25.80. Lloyd logged a time of 26.18 for second place while Kara Sampath put forth a career-record result of 26.63 seconds for third. Maddie Kelso-Heap and Fia Viklund each tallied personal-record times of 27.02 and 27.31, respectively, for fourth and fifth place.
Kelso-Heap tallied a win for the Red Storm in the 400-meter run, while Jalen Jackson, Blessing Assoumany and Sampath rounded out the top four spots in the contest. Kelso-Heap recorded a mark of 59.31 while Jackson and Assoumany each earned 59.37 and 59.64 marks for second and third place, respectively. Sampath engineered a 1:02.83 finish for fourth place.
The Red Storm took the top four spots in the 800-meter run with Leilani Robinson coming out on top with an event-record 2:17.43 finishing time. Ezgi Yasar came in second place after notching a 2:18.46 effort, followed by Jenna D'Onofrio in third place with a personal-best mark of 2:21.5. Ana Dobsa finished the race in fourth place at a 2:29.54 pace.
Zamira Ysaac secured the top spot in the 400-meter hurdles after posting a 1:07.35 effort. Sophia Leslie logged a 1:10.58 mark for second place while Ciara Wiltshire put up a 1:12.12 showing for third place.
St. John's relay squad of Brooklyn Chestnut, Delicia Bent, Tea Siehou and Cassandra Lemus-Sodji claimed gold in the 4x100-meter relay, posting an event record time of 46.57.
The Red Storm picked up another relay win in the 4x400-meter relay. The Johnnies' relay team of Assoumany, Dobsa, D'Onofrio and Robinson registered a mark of 4:08.50. St. John's second relay group of Sampath, Leslie, Ysaac and Nia Holden finished the race in 4:09.91 for second place.
In the long jump, Lemus-Sodji earned another win on the day by logging a 5.68-meter leap. Ashley Sadler placed second with a jump of 5.05 meters, while Jordan Bruinton-Brown rounded out the Red Storm's effort with a personal-best 4.63-meter mark for fourth place in the event.
Viklund placed first in the triple jump for the first time this season following an 11.27-meter leap.
The Red Storm collected the top three spots in the high jump. Ruth Smith totaled a first-place effort with an event-best 1.56-meter jump. Sadler came in second place with a 1.51-meter leap and Klaudia Kurek finished in third place with a personal-record of 1.41 meters.
In the pole vault, Colette Metcalf and Berit Friedenbach rounded out the top two places with 3.35 and 3.20-meter vaults.

Juliet Smith earned her first collegiate win after logging a collegiate-best heave of 13.57 meters, while Maja Henry generated a throw of 12.48 meters for second place. Martina De Buglio tallied a fourth-place finish with a toss of 10.93 meters. Desiree Pagan finished the competition in fifth place with a launch of 10.74 meters.
The Red Storm will return for split-action next weekend between the Miami Alumni Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla., and the Outdoor Metropolitan Championships in New York, N.Y.
