St. John’s Gears Up for Miami’s Hurricane Alumni Invitational and Metropolitan Outdoor Championships

The Red Storm will participate in split action for the second consecutive weekend
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following a 15-win weekend between two meets, the St. John's track & field team will split up for the second weekend in a row between Miami's Hurricane Alumni Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla., on Friday through Saturday and the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships on Saturday at Icahn Stadium in New York, N.Y.
Miami's home meet will kick off at 10 a.m. on Friday with the men's hammer throw while the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
The Red Storm is set to compete in one of Miami's home meets for the third consecutive season. As a team, the Johnnies secured 18 top-10 finishes at the meet last season. Tatyana McKenzie highlighted St. John's success by posting a third-place result off a 23.52 mark in the 200-meter run.
At last year's Metropolitan Outdoor Championships, Jamora Alves logged wins in both the discus and the javelin throw. The Grenada product threw the discus 48.76 meters and launched the javelin 38.35 meters. Martina De Buglio staked a second-place finish in the shot put with a personal-best 12.47-meter toss.
The Red Storm garnered immense success last weekend at both the Monmouth Spring Opener and the program's first outdoor home meet, The Big Hurt.
At Monmouth's home meet, Alves earned her first win of the outdoor season in the discus, providing a 48.03-meter mark. The sophomore's throw beat out the second-place finisher by nearly four meters.
The Johnnies took home the top podium spot in all 14 events they competed in at The Big Hurt last Saturday. Furthermore, the Red Storm secured the top two spots in 11 competitions.
Claire Cushing and Gabriella Caronia led the distance runners in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, earning the two top podium spots. Cushing put forth a 7:16.26 mark for first place while Caronia registered a 7:21.63 finishing time for second.
Four student-athletes set new personal-best times in the 200-meter dash at DaSilva Memorial Field. Ava Spencer paced the race in 25.80 for first place, Kara Sampath put together a 26.63-second mark for third, Maddie Kelso-Heap sprinted the event in 27.02 seconds for fourth while Fia Viklund finished the race in 27.51 for fifth.
Additionally, a group of Johnnies set new meet records in the 4x100-meter relay, the 800-meter run and the high jump. The relay squad of Brooklyn Chestnut, Delicia Bent, Tea Siehou and Cassandra Lemus-Sodji provided a new meet-best mark of 46.57 seconds. Leilani Robinson set a new meet record of 2:17.43 in the 800-meter run while Ruth Smith's leap of 1.56 meters is the new high jump Big Hurt record.
After this weekend's slate of events, the Red Storm will head north to Storrs, Conn., for the UConn Invite from April 12-13.
