St. John’s Wraps Up Regular Season With a 4-2 Victory Over Villanova

The Red Storm has won three straight matches
VILLANOVA, PA. – The St. John's women's tennis team defeated Villanova, 4-2, on Sunday to win its third straight match heading into this week's BIG EAST Tournament.
The Red Storm (8-7, 1-2 BIG EAST) picked up two victories in doubles play to take the team point then won three singles contests to finish off its first conference victory of the season.
Alicia Gomez and Noemi Babikova opened doubles play with a 6-0 shutout of Bella Steffen and Jenna Stevens on the No. 2 court. The St. John's duo improved to 4-1 as a pair this season and has won two straight.
The Johnnies clinched the team point on the No. 1 court when Mouna Bouzgarrou and Arina Gumerova won their fourth match in a row, defeating Maggie Gherig and Emi Callahan, 6-4. Bouzgarrou and Gumerova are 7-1 this season and picked up a win in all three of the Red Storm's matches this week.
After the Wildcats tied the score, 1-1, on the No. 6 court, the Red Storm picked up the next two points in the match. On the No. 5 court, Gomez earned a convincing two-set decision over Valieriia Kornieva, 6-2, 6-2, giving St. John's a 2-1 lead. Bouzgarrou's third singles win in a row, a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Gherig on the No. 1 court, extended the lead to 3-1.
Villanova grabbed its second point with a win on the No. 2 court to make it 3-2. Babikova clinched the match for the Johnnies on the No. 4 court, rallying to beat Lauren Monti in three sets. After dropping the first set, 6-1, the St. John's freshman won the second, 6-4, and the winner-take-all third set, 6-0. Babikova improves to 6-1 this season with the victory.
The Red Storm will head to Cayce, S.C., this week for the BIG EAST Tournament, scheduled to begin on Thursday. Information regarding seeding, opponents and match times will be announced in the coming days.
