No. 75 St. John’s Prepares to Face NJIT

The Red Storm have won four of its last five matches
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 2, 2024) – The No. 75 St. John's men's tennis team will return to action on Wednesday for a midweek contest against NJIT. First serve from the USTA National Tennis Center is set for 1 p.m.
The Red Storm (14-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) are coming off a 7-0 sweep of conference foe Villanova last Saturday and have won four of its last five matches. The Johnnies improved to 16-0 all-time against the Wildcats.
Ryota Kaneda and Adam Groves went 2-0 in doubles play last week to secure BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week. The duo posted matching 6-1 victories in their doubles matches against Monmouth and Villanova, and have won four straight matches as a pair.
Ignacio Vinas also won a pair of matches for the Red Storm last week to secure BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week. After falling a set behind and storming back, Vinas earned a come-from-behind victory over Gabriel Burner to clinch the match for the Red Storm over Monmouth. The junior continued his strong play against Villanova, earning a straight-set victory to help the Red Storm to its fifth-straight sweep over the Wildcats.
Kaneda has excelled in singles play, winning a team-best 13 matches. The junior has won three straight contests and is a perfect 3-0 in the fourth singles position. Former BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week Carl Gustavsson has 11 singles victories this season and picked up a straight-set win against Will Monahan in Saturday's matchup with Villanova.
Danilo Raicevic has continued to impress in his first year in Queens, touting a 10-1 record in singles action. The sophomore picked up wins in both of the Red Storm's victories last week to stretch his personal winning streak to three straight.
NJIT comes to Queens on Wednesday 13-4 on the season. The Highlanders are coming off a close 4-3 setback against Georgetown last Friday in Washington, D.C. NJIT won its first six matches to start the year and lost just one of its opening 12 contests.
The Red Storm is a perfect 4-0 all-time against NJIT. Wednesday will be the first meeting between the programs since St. John's defeated the Highlanders, 5-2, on April 18, 2021.
Following the midweek tilt with NJIT, the Red Storm will return to action for a doubleheader against Marquette and Fordham on Saturday in Queens. First serve in match one at the St. John's Outdoor Courts is set for noon.
