The Red Storm have won three matches in a row
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 3, 2024) – The St. John's men's tennis team defeated NJIT, 4-2, on Wednesday at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The Red Storm (15-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) won the team doubles point and picked up victories in three singles matches to win its third straight contest.
On the No. 3 doubles court, Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda won their fifth straight match as a pair, defeating Severin Risan and German Lopez-Andujar, 6-3. Martin Bugaj and Armando Sotelo clinched the doubles point for the Johnnies on the No 2 court, earning a 6-3 decision over Pavel Petrov and O. Callo von Platen.
Kaneda's team-leading 14th singles victory of the season came on the No. 6 court against Tom Sorin, 6-1, 6-1, giving the Johnnies a 2-1 advantage.
After the Highlanders picked up a point on the No. 1 court, Francisco Bascon earned the third point of the afternoon for the Red Storm when he defeated Nejc Skorjac, 6-4, 6-2. Wednesday was Bascon's first match in the second singles position.
NJIT won on the No. 3 court to make the score 3-2, but Armando Sotelo took down German Lopez Andujar, 6-2, 6-4, to claim the match-clinching fourth point for the home squad.
With the victory, St. John's improves to 5-0 all-time against the Highlanders.
The Red Strom will return to action on Saturday for a doubleheader against Marquette and Fordham at the St. John's Outdoor Courts. First serve against Marquette is set for 1 p.m. and the match against Fordham is set to begin at 4 p.m.
