Jimmy Keenan registers 20th successful caught stealing attempt of the season in setback
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 23, 2024) – The St. John's baseball team fell to Rutgers, 15-0, at Bainton Field on Tuesday evening.
Rutgers opened the game with an eight-run frame in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back.
Third baseman Jayder Raifstanger provided the Red Storm with its first hit of the game, smacking a single up the middle in the top of the third frame.
Catcher Jimmy Keenan registered his 20th caught stealing of the year on a strike'em out, throw'em out double play in the home half of the third. The White Plains, N.Y., native has the most successful caught stealing attempts since 2014 when Tyler Sanchez logged 20 of his own.
Rutgers scored three in the fourth inning and added four more in the fifth to take a 15-run advantage.
The Red Storm saw its best scoring opportunity come in the top of the seventh after Garrett Scavelli ripped a double into right-center. The Johnnies' outfielder advanced to third after tagging up on a flyout to right, but it was as close as he would get before the Scarlet Knights staved off the threat.
St. John's held the Scarlet Knights scoreless over the final three innings. The tandem of Sam Mettert and Louis Marinaro combined for five strikeouts through the sixth and seventh while Tim Cunningham kept Rutgers at bay in the eighth.
Rutgers closed out the game in the ninth with a 1-2-3 frame.
The Johnnies will continue BIG EAST play this weekend when they head to Ohio to take on Xavier in a three-game series beginning on Friday. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
